Looks like I'll be able to run a tweaked high at 1920x1200. Just need to remove things I don't care much for like grass shadows (and grass itself ). Will probably overclock my current CPU and GPU (they've been running at default for the last 3 years).

So it says a gtx460 should be able to handle ultra at 1680x1050. That's assuming that the cpu isn't a bottleneck. How does my Q6600 stand? Would I need to lower the settings to high?

1280x1024 ... ultra runs good so far. I think ... it may actually run at least as good as oblivion....

so, looks like i may just pop a 560 into my current rig? i play at 1920x1080 and would like high settings.

e6400 @ 3.0
4gb ram
8800 gts 640

i was thinking of upgrading the whole thing but would rather wait until after christmas...

can anyone tell me how that phenom II they reference matches up to my e6400? the amd chips are all over the place.

Aren't the Phenom II chips about in line with the Core 2 series? If so, it'd perform roughly like the Phenom II X2 chip (or Phenom II series at 3.0Ghz), which seems to offer about 60% the performance of the 2500K they used in the GPU tests (so take their framerates and multiply by 0.6). Not sure how much your RAM will hurt you, but its possible that you might even be able to go with AA with the extra horsepower your 560 has (I kinda doubt it though). FXAA should be possible though.

Is it overclocked? If you're running 3.0Ghz it looks like you could if you run low or no AA or FXAA.

Thanks man. I was exhausted last night and looking around for old CPU benches didn't appeal to me much.

I think that's what I will do- pick up a 560 or 560ti and roll with what I have until next year.

Tried a bit this morning:

Q9450 @ 3.2GHz
HD5850 @ 860 / 1125
1920x1080 Ultra, AAx4, FXAA on

I'm getting 25-45 FPS. I think I'll drop AA to x2 or completely as FXAA seems to do most of the IQ improvement - I'd rather not go under 30 FPS.

Game looks great (apart from horribly blocky shadows and low res textures here and there) - the vistas are amazing!

No, it's a B3. I'm not entirely sure what that means but I remember at the time when I bought it (2007) that the G0s were coming out and the B3s were supposedly bad at overclocking, so I never did it.

Now it's old and the heatsink is full of dust so I don't think I should even try it now.

Looks like I'll be playing high at the most.

Recommended Specs

Windows 7/Vista/XP PC (32 or 64 bit)
Processor: Quad-core Intel or AMD CPU
4GB System RAM
6GB free HDD space
DirectX 9.0c compatible NVIDIA or AMD ATI video card with 1GB of RAM (Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 or higher; ATI Radeon 4890 or higher).

Minimum Specs

Windows 7/Vista/XP PC (32 or 64 bit)
Processor: Dual Core 2.0GHz or equivalent processor
2GB System RAM
6GB free HDD Space
Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 512 MB of RAM
So this will be the first new game I've bothered to install since my last system upgrade last year. Based on the specs above, sounds like my Radeon HD 5770 and Intell I7 860 should be able to handle this. Hopefully I will not be sleeping tonight and instead will be playing me some Skyrim.

Works with SLI but not CF? That will upset some folks. Hopefully AMD will get a fix out for that soon.

Is it me, or does this game need more than 4 gb of system memory? My rig starts lagging after ~2 hours of continuous play...

My PC can handle Skyim at ultra if I set the shadows to high. With shadows at ultra there is just too much slowdown for me.

ATI xfire performance is pretty crappy right now imoho. Two 6970's dipping routinely into 20s on ultra 1920*1200 without AA. First game in awhile that could actually benefit from a cpu upgrade. Running i5-750 @ 4.2Ghz. Well in my instance it would be just an architecture upgrade....not a clock upgrade as the toms hardware benchmarks pointed to.

There have been games in every generation of hardware with inefficient shadow renderers that kill performance when set to max. That pretty much always implies bad coding, not necessarily high quality graphics or slow processing.

Q6600 is fine. This game isn't as demanding as many think. The main thing that makes this game look good isn't a hardware hungry engine. It is the work of texture artist that know their stuff.

It is a driver issue. Most of the problems I see with frame rate complaints are ATI users. Your setup should be buttery smooth. I am having no issues at all with a GTX275 on high.

The game seems to run quite well on my system. I got some slight FPS choppiness at Whiterun with everything maxed out, and I'm trying to figure out which options to back off. It seems to look and run pretty much the same unless I dramatically reduce several of the detail sliders...even then, the difference is quite small on terms of FPS and visual quality. Which settings actually have the biggest overall impact and which are a waste of time to mess around with?

I'm getting some mouse lag that doesn't seem to be related to the framerate. In fact, it seems to happen more indoors and in dungeons, where the framerate is *higher* than outdoors. It was really bad at the end of the tutorial cave but then completely disappeared in the outdoors. Then it came back when I entered a small, not very detailed house...

Also, what doe the "Object Detail Fade" checkbox actually do? There's already an "Object Fade" slider, so why is there also a checkbox?

5870 in Crossfire + 4.5GHz 2600K should yield good numbers at 1920x1080 with Ultra settings and maxed AA and FXAA?

According to the reviews and Tom's testing Skyrim doesn't work with CF. AMD is supposedly working on new drivers. My advice is wait till they release before buying if you run CF. Once new AMD drivers are released then, yeah, that set up should run nicely with everything at Ultra and maxed out.
