Any tech consultants here??

Just wondering if there were any here and if so, do they enjoy the position? It would be with IBM, so if there are any IBM consultants, their input would be even better.

I currently work for Big Blue as a manufacturing technician; so it would defiantly be a big move up for me. I think I have the experience and background to be a suitable candidate, I guess I just want to have a good idea of what a typical tech consultant?s day is like before I apply for the position.

Both of my roomates work for IBM one is a security consultant the other a finance consultant.
The security consultant just put in for the 2 week resignation, he really did not like all the travel/paperwork that he was doing. He wanted to do more coding.
The financial consultant is going to India for a month for a Kodak project he is on, he was very pessimistic about the postion until this project. But I have a feeling once thats done, he'll leave as well.

Overall they liked it at first but after a 1-1.5 years they are both getting tired of it.
Also the bonus/pay increase is almost non-existant (one of the reasons the security cons. is leaving).

80-100% travel jobs are fun for the first few months, but then it gets old. it takes a certain type of person to stay in such a career for the long term.

i used to work for accenture, which is one of ibm's competitors in consulting. long hours, no overtime, living out of a suitcase, and dealing with crazy clients and managers are the norm...other than that, it's pretty cool

I currently work as a Technology Consultant for a direct competitor of IBM (IBM and us are usually #1 & 2 depending on which ranking you look at)...

That assessment is pretty accurate, long hours, no overtime, constant traveling, dealing with clients, etc... But you learn soooo much in the process
