Any UPS drivers in here?

I'm jobless so I need a job that doesn't suck. The last job I had was delivering equipment for a rental company. I got to drive around Manhattan all day which was great. It made my eight hour shift go by like four hours. So, I want to try UPS delivery next. How easy is it to drive for UPS? What are the requirements. Do they pluck people off the streets or do I have to go to UPS training Academy? How much is the pay? When do I get a raise? Do I get to keep any undeliverable packages?

Looks like their driver turnover is low. You probably have to start out as a truck loader and work your way up.

Correct. There is a waiting list composed of current employees, based on seniority.

The wait is at least 3-5 years in a busy sector(from what I've been told).

I have a friend who works as a UPS driver. Took him 8 years to working as a sorter to become a driver.

My dad just retired from UPS after 30 years. It sucks during the summer because most trucks have no AC and it sucks during Christmas time because some drivers will be working 12-15 hours a day (although you do get a jumper). You will probably not start as a driver. They'll give you a few months to a few years doing the other jobs (sorting, loading trucks, jumper, etc.). I don't know if there's a training program for being a driver - my dad started there so long ago that nothing like that existed. It pays very well. You'll make somewhere around $50-60k a year as a driver. You get a raise when the union negotiates one with UPS. You do not get to keep undeliverable packages because there's really no such thing. The only way a package would be completely undeliverable is if the label falls off. You do however get a pension which you can receive after retirement (most retire at 25-30 years). You also get rewards for each year that you drive without an accident. I believe every 5th year is a big reward (TV, stereo, etc.).

It took a buddy of mine 9 years from the time he started loading/unloading trucks to when he finnally became a driver.

Not to change the topic subject, but I saw the funniest thing the other day. I saw my friend (the ups driver) delivering packages to the post office. When I saw him later on that day I asked him about it. He told me that ups has to deal with so many packages that they actually sub-contract the regular postal service to deliver some of them.

They have a new service called Basic which gets delivered through the USPS. Fedex used to have something similar.. not sure if it still exists.

Not to make this a racial thing, but are you non-white? I think UPS does do some preferential hiring of drivers, which if you are could work in your favor. I know for a fact that there is a waiting list to become a driver as others above have said. However a friend of mine told me about her daughter getting hired off the street as a driver, without ever having to put in time working in the loading docks which is how most people get there. I don't know if I'd call it a quota, but that makes me think there is some kind of preference given to women, and it may apply to minorities also.

if i was a UPS driver i sure as hell wouldn't post that i was one on this forum.

Yeah, I worked at ups when i was 18 or so loading boxes etc. Anyway yes there is typically a really long waiting list but that all depends on region, definately not something you will find off the street.

I work at UPS in the warehouse loading/unloading trucks. I've been there 3 years and I'm not a driver, not sure if i ever will be. But, you can do weekend/part-time driving after 6 months after being there. Maybe even full-time depending on the location. When you start you work in the warehouse, then what you do is bid on driving jobs when they post them and work your way up.

you're right. There is preferential treatment not only for drivers but management and other positons also.

That might explain why Penske delivered my monitor instead of FedEx.

Why is there preferential treatment? Do they like Asians the most? You know the reputation we have as the best dang drivers that ever hit the streets. For the uninitiated, watch Fast And Furious: Tokyo Drift. It's pretty much a documentary.

What if someone has been a UPS driver in CA and they moved to TX, do they automatically become driver in TX or do they start from the bottom again?

Jumpers work with a full-time driver and help him out w/deliveries. Jumpers are temporary and they only work during december, maybe some in november, since thats the busiest time. Alot of guys start out as jumpers and then get permanent employment at the warehouse.
