Any way to test CPU?

I've never had such a hard time building a computer.
I have a pair of Opteron 170s sitting in a pair of evga nf4 SLI mainboards, and nothing is working.
At first I got strang beep codes and the debug LED never cycled, so EVGA shipped out two new mobos for RMA.
Now, I've put one board in my case, and when I flip the power supply on, the fans kick on for a second or two, then everything shuts down. And for some reason my power button isn't turning the system on.
Aside from having another brand mainboard (I don't have access to one) is there a way to test the cpu? Or figure out what the heck is going on?
I've been tinkering with this thing for over a month now...

Fans should fire up regardless of processor errors. How's your PSU?

Call around to the local computer repair shops and see who will test your proc for the least amount of money. If you have a place in your area that you've visited enough to develope a relationship ... you may even be lucky enough to have them test it for free.

Lets hope its not those 170's .... if they were both bad, it would be enough to make a grown man cry.

I reckon your PSU is either faulty or it doesnt have enough power to run the system, what is the psu and whats your system specs?

Another vote for the PSU being the source of the problem...

As others have stated, just having the board plugged in the fans should all spin up...

The PSU is an Antec Truepower 550w
Currently, the system consists of 3 case fans, 1 heatsink fan, the Opty 170, 1gb ram and a 7800gt. I haven't plugged in drives yet.
