ding ding ding, this is a limitation of CDMA, but there is a newer version that does voice + data - not sure if verizon implemented this yet

That's great and all (being able to use both at same time) but I can count on my hands the amount of times I needed this feature. I know that it's being done in the background (getting mail, etc) but honestly I can wait another 30 seconds after my call to retrieve the data.

My main concerns are voice & data speed/reliability. Right now my data speeds are great but voice is horrible. VZ could be the opposite - great voice but poor data. I use 90% of my phone for data so that could be a deal breaker which would keep me with AT&T.

I use the voice+data on my iPhone fairly often. I'll find myself on the phone with someone and they send me an email for us to discuss. Or I'll use maps while talking to someone either looking for a place to eat or trying to get directions for them.

VZ has better coverage, but ATT isn't bad enough where I am to justify canceling my contract and switching back to VZ. Maybe when I'm done with my contract I'll think about it.

If this doesn't turn out to be a VZ iPhone4 today people are going to be devastated. Much like the "big" Beatles iTunes announcement.

Seriously! I have been estimating that it was going to be out this past September with no luck. I guess if it isn't announced I'll break down and get 2 iPhone 4s with AT&T and hope they let me upgrade when the next generation comes out in the summer.

I believe all iPhones are usually at 18mo for an upgrade, sadly. But you can always pay the ETF and sell the phone to cover it... which is what I bet a lot of people do when the new phones come out anyways.

Sigh. Once I got off AT&T (due to craptacular service on my iPhone 2G, then 3G, then 3GS), I had enough money leftover to cover a lease on a new car every month. I'm not looking forward to another big monthly bill a la the Verizon iPhone

I want to so badly, but my boss will eventually get us all iPhone 4's.

I can't wait for the announcement. I'll be purchasing a White Evo 4 later today most likely for my personal line.

Yay!! It's been announced. I'm at work now so I can't see it all. Have they announced packages/plans and pricing?

I am hoping that all the people leaving for Verizon will lessen the load on the AT&T network. It almost feels like I will get a network upgrade while doing nothing for it!

On Verizon, you cannot talk on the phone and, at the same time, check e-mail or use maps, correct?

MotionMan

THIS.

I hate Verizon with a holy passion. It might have something to do with the $700 they said I owed them for my Verizon service that took them 6 YEARS to resolve. Oh, did I mention that I never HAD Verizon service? I wonder if they're going to put their VCast crapware on the phones and charge you $5 (or maybe $10) a month extra to use Maps?

No thanks, AT&T has been fine, and with the people jumping ship it will only get better.

Apple doesn't allow AT&T to put their crapware on the phone, and they won't allow Verizon to either. However, AT&T does have a Navigator app that you can install for $10/mo and I bet Verizon will be doing the same with all of their apps.

Which begs another question, I wonder if I can download Verizon apps on my AT&T iPhone?

Apple wouldn't allow crapware to be installed on their iPhones. And since the Verizon apps would be on the App Store, why wouldn't you be able to install them on any iPhone?

Remember, this is just an additional carrier. Just like in the UK. Just like in Canada. Yes it is a big deal. But then again, it's not that big of a deal.

Well, I can't install Vodafone/Rogers applications, to my knowledge, so I'd assume Apple would be able to limit what's available for me to purchase based upon my carrier.

Not that I want to install Verizon apps, just think it would be funny.

That's probably just a geographical limitation. Neither would I. No use for it.

That was the original sticking point for why the iPhone didn't go to Verizon to begin with (that was Apple's preferred carrier) but Verizon wouldn't budge on having their crapware on the phone and Apple wouldn't budge on it *not* being on there. I haven't seen any details yet on what deal they worked out, though I'm sure that as the iPhone passed each million handset milestone the Verizon geniuses were kicking themselves.

EDIT: Looks like Apple won that battle:
Will any Verizon Wireless apps be available on iPhone?

iPhone will have the 3G Mobile Hotspot app pre-installed, and it will also have other popular apps available in the market such as VZ Navigator, and V CAST Media Manager.

It would be naive to think Apple wouldn't allow apps exclusive to specific networks if those networks are willing to pay extra for the right. Most 3rd party apps won't be affected, but i'm sure there will network exclusives. I wouldn't even be suprised if the networks even started developing their own line of exclusive apps. We live in a world built upon software.

Meh, I'm still waiting for T-Mobile to get the iPhone. I'm surprised that this didn't happen before Verizon as T-Mobile's systems are more compatible than Verizon's CDMA network. Besides, I like to be able to remove my sim card with all its data and place it into another device.

(And I refuse to go to AT&T because their billing department is evil...my fiancée and her family had them since the mid nineties and I can't count how many times they've been screwed when they renew a contract)

I'll jump ship if Verizon was going to offer me a a super price for bundling w\ my existing verizon internet/tv...

Other than that it's not worth switching to me.

Sounds like most people who are set to switch over live in bad reception areas. My service is pretty solid in most places, and I don't have the money or time to be getting another provider to find out whether or not their service is better.

Price wise, verizon offers similar or identical packages. If I got the same package I have w\ att on verizon, it would be the same price.

Amount of people on Verizon far outweighs T-mobile. I would have been shocked if T-mobile got it first.

ATT in my area only comes in on the eDGE network. Data, but more like dial-up data. Slow and totally hit n miss reliable. ATT promissed 3 tower upgrades in my area by Fed 15 2011. Well see... If no go, then hello ebay goodbye ATT. Verizon here I come.
I don't mind paying thru the nose if ATT delivers on their side. What pisses me off is paying thru the nose, and only getting EDGE. I call in nightly to tech support because the podcast I download died or hung or froze half way, even though I get full bars (with the EDGE). ATT always tries to focus on "can you make calls". I bought the phone to do data services. I hardly ever use the phone as a phone. If ATT cannot deliver data 3g, then service is useless.

I think I'm going to wait until the iPhone 5 or 4GS or whatever comes out in summer... Also, I think the whole 4G moniker being deployed by the carriers is the perfect name for a new iPhone.

I really think I'm going to jump ship from Android to Apple. The whole fact is... the applications on Android just aren't worth it to actually stay Android exclusive. Sure there are a bunch of free ones compared to the App Store, but the fact is they aren't as developed and won't be for another year or so just like how the App Store first came about.

I am hoping that Sprint announces something evil on Feb 7th. I can't wait for leaks to start appearing.

No way in heck. Yes AT&T sucks the big one, but really CDMA? That's junk tech that was for last decade. It can't even handle voice + data simultaneously. Where's the darn LTE iPhone? THAT I will switch to in a heartbeat. But even with limitations having half-way decent coverage for a change would be nice. But with Verizon offering the iPhone I think Android will suffer, as it should. It's a terrible mobile UI with fragmentation that is ridiculous. I have an AT&T Captivate that STILL has not gotten Froyo. The only Android that is worth it is the Nexus S since it doesn't have any stupid skins and customizations that delay updates for months altogether.

Yeah I would say Android's success was due to heavy marketing and availability on ALL carriers. If any mobile OS deserves recognition it is WebOS, just killed by hopeless hardware and advertising that was so bad that words cannot describe it.

They should hit T-mobile soon. I would actually switch to a GSM carrier that is not AT&T. In fact why not hit all the carriers? It's about time.
