well, u get limited resources....and the way u do the formations and special moves for each craft at what stage of combat is important....u think a group of 12 scouts can't beat a frigate...ur wrong.....switch from sphere to delta (or some other formation that keeps the ships tight) repeatedly while pressing boost (learn ur hotkeys) can take out a frigate EASILY

So complicated compared to what I am used to!!

Arg.. good game though.. I am going to have to keep playing. I keep getting my butt whooped.

Someone find me cheat codes!

don't forget in single player campaign, ship preservation is key. Whatever survives when you end a mission is what you get when you start the next mission, so micro management is a must.

It was an awesome game, but some parts took too damn long. In the first game, once I finished the mission with the sphere of enemy ion frigates you can capture, it became far too easy. Cataclysm was better IMO because of the interface changes.

Multiplayer was just too hard to get into, and there are only like 4 people who seem to play it online nowadays.

Great game. For me the two keys to winning were mastering the interface (especially the hot keys) and capturing enemy ships. I can't emphasize the second point enough--there are soooo many opportunities in the original Homeworld to capture ion frigates, starting from the very first time you meet them (and even larger capital ships from time to time). Once you start scavenging your fleet will become progressively larger than the level designers anticipated, and your overwhelming force will make successive levels easier and easier (at least until the end).

I liked Cataclysm better, though. Too bad there were fewer chances to scavenge enemy vessels than in the original game.

Can you explain more about the scaveging of other ships? I know the scavenger ships can do this but wouldnt the opposing army just wipe them out when they are trying to capture the firgates?

I DO! I DO!

I thought noone else did!!!

I bought it the day it came out!

One of the best games of all time. PAH!

THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME!

I like the Star Wars mod thats out for it, if I can find the link I'll post it.

For those of you wanting it I lost my CD a few months ago but I pick up a new CD from BestBuy for $2.99 over Christmas break. Money well spend in my opinion.

Oh forgot to mention, at BestBuy the GOTY Edition was $2.99 and it also included a HomeWorld soundtrack CD with all that great music we've come to love.

Has this ever come out in a multipack kinda thing, with both games together? That's what I've been waiting for.

Nah. It's been a long time since I played HW, but as I recall the computer was very poor at coordinating attacks. It likes to send ships at you in waves that are easily handled...and you can use fighters on evasive tactics to harass the ships you're targeting for salvage, keeping them occupied. You usually can't capture them all but if you keep a large (6-8+) fleet of salvage corvettes you can nab wounded ion frigates with ease (you only need 2 salvage corvettes for each and remember their ion beam is piss-poor at hitting small ships like the corvettes). Destroyers aren't much more difficult (3 vettes apiece).

So for example if I was facing a fleet of 4 frigates what I'd do is destroy 2 of them with my conventional forces and damage the other 2. Then I'd split my 6 corvettes that were lingering back from the fray and send 3 corvettes at each frigate so even if they manage to destroy one through luck it won't matter. That is a pretty conservative approach, too...it's not too difficult to take 3 (or even all 4 frigates) in that situation. Then after a few levels you should have a sizable wall of ion array frigates that can deal with most of the AI fleets.

Of course the ship that can really the tide for you is the heavy cruiser. It takes a lot of vettes to capture (5? 6?) and can trash 1 or 2 before you get close, but as long as you destroy its escorts and damage it heavily before closing with the vettes there shouldn't be a problem. And it's well worth the effort.

OK, here is the super secret cheat code:

Bring all your ships close to the Mothership, and then select ALL of them, including the Mothership. Once all of the ships are selected, hold down the left shift key and type "ACCESS". I think you will be very surprised at the result.

That game was amazing when it came out. Who else would send their ships in to get slaughtered just to watch the explosions?

LOL Yeah. Cataclysm was better for that, though, since you had those kamikaze ships.

I bought one of those Homeworld games with a gift certificate. It's still in shrinkwrap, I think. I ended up with more games than time, and still haven't got back to it. I just finished GTA3 last week, and then went back and reloaded Tribes 2. I still haven't finished Soldier of Fortune 2 and I've barely even started Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. My life sucks . (j/k)

Oh yeah, I started playing Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction. Again. Some more.

It was such an incredible game at the time...one of my favorites! The opening theme "Agnus Dei" (sp?) haunts me to this day, it's that beautiful.

You really should try it if only to here the music. The soundtrack is just that awesome. It also has one of the best tutorials I've ever seen in a game.
