In an effort to diversify my DVD collection, I'm phasing out all the crap I've bought over the years like Adam Sandler movies and mainstream comedy/drama/horror. What was I thinking.

Anyways, I tried going through all the top movies on Rotten Tomatos and finding ones that might be interesting. Altered States was the first one I've bought off that list. Wow, what a wierd movie. Not so much the special effects, but the ideas behind the movie. I actually liked it, and will definately watch it again!

I've got a couple dozen movies I'd like to get, based on what I found on RT. Any other suggestions of where I should go to find some prime examples of the non-mainstream movie industry? I'm new, but want to learn.

Yup. Werid movie... I saw it a long time ago and need to see it again (I forget most of it besides that it was weird).

Funny you mention that

The thought behind my post. Check out SLC Punks and Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas as well.

I liked Altered States myself, but yeah, its weird.

Here are some titles to check out:

Phantom of the Paradise
The Fog
The Innocents (1961) and The Haunting (the original 1963)

non-mainstream?

Man Bites Dog - mockumentary following serial killer, extremely violent and funny black comedy
Buddy Boy - guy falls in love, goes mad...with a twist
Dancer in the Dark - very sad, slow Dogme 95 film about blind woman in unusual circumstances, a musical staring Bjork
Buffalo '66 - guy gets out of jail and walks back into his lonely life, until he meets a girl
Sweet and Lowdown - Woody Allen film staring Sean Penn, maybe his best performance
The Celebration - Dogme 95 film following a family reunion, a surprising and amazing drama
Chopper - Australian film staring Eric Bana as a psychopath
Keep the River on Your Right - Documentary about old man from NYC going back to the jungle where he once lived...and ate people

Wow, thanks for the suggestions guys.
Fear and Loathing is one of my all time favorites(I own it), so I'm into these sort of wierd drug-like movies with a strange plot. I especially like the ones that confuse everyone else, as they try to overthink what it's supposed to mean.

thomsbrain - it's basically about a professor who thinks that man's memories are never lost, passed through DNA or genes or whatever. And by falling into a deep enough state of hypnosis(he locks himself in a water tank to get to that point) with the help of a crazy Mexican drug he can hopefully find the secret to mankind. things get out of hand. very freaky deaky if you're high while watching it, I'd imagine.

Adam Sandler movies, and the like, are just too predictable in my opinion. You see one, you've seen em all. These older movies were still doing original ideas, that's why I'm liking them.

I haven't seen the movie, but the music (by John Corgliano) is outstanding.

I've seen it and yes it is a good flick to watch while high.

The book is good as well, if a bit short.

SEE it??? Hell, in 1976, I LIVED it!!!!!! Iso Tanks, Peyote, Mescaline, Mushrooms..... Long strange trips in the desert....... Nothing is more bizarre than real life in the 21st century.

It is a good movie for discussion afterward.

See also "HEAD" starring The Monkees.... The trip out scene in there is particularly cool.
