Anyone here ever donate plasma?

Apparently there's a plasma collection place (Aventis) right here in Tucson. You can donate a few times a week and you generally see about 30 bucks from it each time you donate (they technically pay you for your time and travel rather than the plasma itself for various tax reasons).

Just curious, anyone ever done it? Do you get sick, nauseaus, weak, whatever? I might give it a try, an extra 400 bucks a month is nothing to sneeze at. Lord knows I've got nothing better to do.

Plasma is the liquid that surrounds our blood cells.

It was found a few decades ago that a major problem with blood loss was not just the loss of blood, but the collapsing of arteries from this lack of blood (arterial wall are held up by the blood itself). This prevented oxygen from reaching critical areas of the body, thus causing even more damage. Plasma, in sufficient enough quantities, can hold the arterial walls up and allow what oxygen the blood can transport to reach it's destination.

You can only do it twice a week, unless something has changed. I got paid $25 for the first visit in a week, and $15 for the second.

Yes once

they extract your blood, extract the plasma from your blood and inject your blood back in your body and repeat

I cant remember how many times they had to do this, but it did take about 1 hour

My gf and I did it a couple of weeks ago. With a $20 referal bonus and $20 bonus for going back within a week, we made $180 for the both of us with 2 donations ($35 each the first, $45 for the second and $20 bonus). Not bad. It's usually about $240 a month though, assuming you go twice a week ($25 and $35).

First time took about 3hrs, they do a physical and stuff. 2nd time took 1hr. It's kind of rough on the body though, my gf apparently had a slight reaction to the anticlotting factors (she had to lay down for a bit and they gave her a saline drip) and the second time I wasn't hydrated enough and felt very dizzy on the way home. It's supposed to get easier once your body gets used to it. The process itself is ok, they have wireless internet and tv, the needle is kind of big but you get used to it.

If anyone is seriously thinking about this, I haven't gone HD yet and would love to get a hold of a plasma up for donation.

The needle obviously hurts but once it's in it is like an IV, you don't really feel it. You have to pump your fist to keep the blood going though and your arm might get numb. But it's not as bad as you imagine.

Just think of the kids with hemophilia who would be dead without your plasma.

You're not donating it, you're selling it.

Never donated or sold plasma, but I've donated blood a few times.

Yeah, guess I should've clarified better. I only say "donating" because that's how the company insists on categorizing it. It's just a way to duck taxes for both them and you. I'm not "donating" anything, I'm getting paid for it.

I guess the 400 dollar a month figure was stretching it a bit. I thought you could go 3 times a week, and I heard it paid roughly 30 bucks each time, so I was multiplying 30 times 4.3333333 in my head. It still sounds worth it.

I do donate blood a few times a year, too. However that's probably not going to happen if I'm selling my plasma too

In my poor college days I did this twice a week for about a year or so.

It typically took longer to get into a chair to donate than the actual donation took.

As others said you squeeze a ball in your hand while the process is running.

The system withdraws the blood, spins out the plasma and returns the red cells back into your arm. These cycles happen anywhere from 3-7 times depending on how hydrated you are and how much plasma they're taking (it is based off weight -- therefore a smaller person gives less plasma.) The process goes faster if you don't eat fatty foods. You can actually tell if someone is eating bad foods by how the plasma looks (it is cloudier and more yellowish.)

Each time you give they take your temperature and take a small blood sample to try to verify that you're healthy. The needle hurts a bit going in and when they remove it but you get to the point that you ignore it at all other times.

It does scar up your veins though and it gets progressively harder for them to place the needle. If they can't get a blood flow off one arm, they'll try the other (you typically change arms each time you go to let them heal.) Heaven forbid you get someone who is new at sticking you -- they may try 4-5 times!

I finally quit because I got a better job and got PO'd at the place because of the wait.

Bought my AMD k6-2 350 that way . The needle doesn't hurt much but it does feel weird when the machine starts pumping stuff back in. Cold.
You meet some interesting people at those places.

I've sold plasma. It's not too bad if you don't mind needles. About an hour each time, and it's a decent way to make some quick cash. I wouldn't recommend it for longer than a month or two at a time, however, since your veins start looking like a junkie's, and it starts hurting more and more when they stick you.

I'm kind of out of it but are you guys talking about platelets?

I used to donate them for free to the red cross and local hospital coop ll the time back in the day...
