Discussion Anyone interested in math?

I used to like it, now I tolerate it. I’m a EE so don’t have a ton of formal training but I can bumble my way around differential geometry and Lie groups when I need to at work, which is all the time lately. When it comes to work I’d rather be in the mathematical weeds but in my free time I’d never worry about it again, and just garden and play music all day.

Disclaimer: I say that after working all day. these videos probably are super interesting.

No way, you had to operators and commutators in quantum mechanics right? Commutators like [A,B] = AB-BA. Eg with momentum operator Pψ = - i ħ ∂ψ/∂x and position operator Xψ = xψ to get the commutator relation [P, X]ψ = - i ħψ that makes it super easy to derive the Heisenberg uncertainty principle.

On a side not, curious, do you have a favorite book for general relativity? I really loved Spacetime Physics (1st edition) for coming to grips with special relativity but never have spent any time really getting in the weeds with GR.

I have a worse attitude so I'd work out the math to make sure it fell on the boss' BMW. Then say oops forget to convert English to metric or some shit like that. Worked for NASA when they lost that rover on Mars.

I'm interested, just not very capable! I found out I have math dyslexia (dyscalculia) a few years ago. Failed every math class I ever took & dropped out of advanced programming because of a combination of that & working memory issues from my Inattentive ADHD. Trying to do math just makes me feel like I'm about to get a nosebleed lol. I've been revisiting it VERY slowly as an adult & my brain still fogs out on even basic algebra. I can't even calculate tips in my head haha!

Huh, that's not what we taught to call them. Then again, I've not really had a use for QM outside taking the class.

I escaped Relativity. I had decided I wanted to go for a masters in EE, so I took a couple of EE classes (my advisor approved). Didn't get the master's, big funding cut because of an economic downturn one month b/4 classes started. Too late to apply for gov't loan.

I love this proof that pi is irrational, based on a 1947 paper requiring no math higher than maybe second semester calculus to understand.

Some pretty cool videos on the construction of the tensor product, with the second video proving a theorem needed for showing linear independence in the theorem about bases in the first video.

Should be pretty digestible if you have seen quotient spaces before in algebra.

Hah, my son recently told me he doesn't understand how 0.999 repeating is equal to one and I never thought to explain it with the put a number between it and 1 concept.

I think I went as far as Calculus III and double integrals.

Areas under a curve and tangent lines would garner much more attention if a booty was being used as an example.

Would help a lot in designing comfortable bikinis and undergarments via simulation. Also in designing fabric with the right amount of tension to not get trapped in the butt crack.
