Typical...

if you stick to the right areas and the right times with people... you're ok just like in most cities... the Big Apple is the only REAL city in the US imho.

Edit: notice the number of responses from people that don't even live there or are in the metro area... sheesh.

Like most cities, NYC has its bad parts, but as a whole, it has alot going for it. High cost of living aside, it is a great place to spend your single life, and there is an endless amount of things to see and do. Ya, people say there are rude people, but you find that almost anywhere you go, just NY'ers tend to be more vocal.

I remember a quote saying "I could live in New York for two lifetimes, and still not see all there is to offer..."

I lived in Brooklyn for about 4 and half months myself (Prospect Place area - lived on Prospect between Vanderbilt/Underhill right on the Q line).

As far as it being 'dangerous', any place can be dangerous. Just be street smart and avoid area's that look bad, because chances are that it is a bad area. Don't ride a subway line too late at night, unless you know the number of people that are on that line, and if you have to take one late, sit near the middle in the car that the conductor is in. Avoid most of the Bronx and don't go to far up into Harlem, it's not all bad, but once you get up to 110th or so, it get a hell of alot uglier. Time's Square can be another ugly place, there's usually safety in numbers, but there are some shady people up there. On 8th between 42nd and 48th there's still quite a few adult bookstores with 'hustlers' outside of them, i.e. asking if you want women or drugs. Don't even say no to these people. Just look down and don't aknowledge them.

As far as the people being rude, I think that's far from the truth. If you think bluntness is rude, then you will never suceed on the east coast. I personally enjoyed it more, when you go to the grocery store it's not some woman talking about her 12 grandchildren while slowly writing a check, you slap your purchase on the counter, get the total, pay, then get the hell out of the line. It's very fast paced, almost too much at times, but there's part's of that I enjoyed.

I myself would probably never move back there (mostly because of a bad relationship) but I think it's a great city.

I love NYC! I went there for a vacation a few years back - throughly loved the place! I don' t know if I could afford to live there any time soon, but it'd be nice. Good luck!

NYC--The City you love to hate.

NYC--The City so nice, they named it twice

I lived there for many years. It's a great city to be a yuppie, but a "miserable" city if you can't afford a decent place and lifestyle. For middle income folks, I'd definitely live somewhere else.

If you're outgoing, you'll have fun. If you're shy, then it's just a big town with unmet potential, and thusly, you'll be wasting your time as other cities will more adequately suit your needs while saving you vast amounts of money.......If you become a corporate lawyer, you'll be working HUGE hours and won't have time to enjoy the city, so you'll be in a Catch-22 situation.

Even though I don't live there any more, I will return. I'll definitely RETIRE & DIE AS A NEW YORKER! As a WEST SIDER!

yourself

Manhattan is nice but rest can be unpleasant

If you plan to live in Manhattan, make sure your income is well above $70-$80k to afford a decent standard of living, rent and lifestyle costs.

If you will stay in the dorms at NYU or Columbia or grad housing apartments, then enjoy the savings !!

I loved NYC when I first got here in August.... but now, it's so dull..... to have fun here, you need to have money, and as a poor college student, i have no money

there are many things to do here... but it can be very sad if you're alone
