It appears that every gen 1 30gb zune on the planet has locked up simultaneously at the loading screen, with no ability to reboot or do anything. They stay like this on the loading screen until the battery runs dead, and plugging it in only puts it back into that state.

Will be interesting to see how Microsoft gets out of this one. I dont see how they can even push a firmware update with them locked up like this.

I've been running my 1st gen 30GB Zune for over a year and never had a problem.

So have I, until today. I'll bet you'll find yours in the same state.

maybe that is causing it

Probably has to do with the clock functionality they added recently. I'll bet a developer is packing his shit up at MS right now.

Oops! There is a way to fix it that involves opening the player that someone figured out.

There's a fix:

"Your zune will need a "hard reset."

To do this, use a small screwdriver to pop off the plastic shielding where the zune cable plugs into and remove the two screws on either side of the plug. Next pop the cover off and locate the battery plug at the top left corner of the zune, using your screw driver, pop the cable connection half way off, and do this to the other plug on the right side. Wait 3 seconds, then push down the right connector and then the left battery connecter. Your zune should start up immediately. Press the backing of the zune down (make sure headphone jack is aligned) and put the screws and cover back in place.

It's an easy process but if you're unsure don't attempt it if you think you'll screw it or something. "

Not pretty, but it might help those of you who have this problem.

I had read that a guy did this by opening it up and pulling the battery out, only to have it lock back up.

I think it's the firmware. Someone posted in the engadget comments that his 3.0 firmware zune is fine.

Luckily my 8gb is not affected.

I was literally listening to mine last night when it crashed. I did a restart (down back or whatever) and it then restarted and got stuck on the loading screen with a full bar just like that. That's... friggin weird.

I guess this is Microsoft's way of punishing us for not going up to the next gen.

Edit : I figured it was just mine that was busted but apparently not.

It's a problem with all 30gb Zune's. Some say being on older firmware prevented the crash, others are saying they are on the older firmware but it crashed anyway. For sure though, If you're zune is on the current firmware it probably crashed.

Doesn't affect any v2 zune's (4,8,80,120) it seems.

Microsoft seems to know that it's an issue : http://www.zune.net/en-US/support/default.htm

Status:

Customers with 30gb Zune devices may experience issues when booting their Zune hardware. We?re aware of the problem and are working to correct it. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your patience!

There is a "fix" where you can remove the battery and basically hard reset the zune - But people are reporting that while this "fixes" it - The next time you connect it to the computer to sync/add songs whatever it'll crash it again.

I'm not too inconvenienced by this - So I'm mainly finding it pretty hilarious that there was a global crash like this. But if they don't find a good fix for it/won't fix replace my zune.. i'll be a sad puppy.

Maybe their response to this will be giving everyone a next gen zune?? Maybe an option since they probably cant push a firmware update with them frozen up like this. Then again it might just resolve itself when we roll into the new year.
