Anyone play with long exposures?

I went camping with my wife and a friend about two weeks ago. As our campfire died down, we found that twirling the smoldering end of my fire poking stick would make it glow and make all kinds of cool shapes in the darkness.

I took out my camera, set the exposure for 1-2 seconds and fired away. I was really surprised by how well some of the photos turned out, being that it was all hand held and set to an arbitrary exposure. It's really neat how a long exposure can reveal shapes and colors normally invisible to the human eye.

In any case, here are some of my favorites from that night:

Fire Painting I
Fire Painting II
Fire Painting III

Any others have interesting long exposure photos to share?

Here are two pics from my time in Sydney

This one

and

This one

Both are taken with the camera pointing straight up and with minute exposures.

Only photoshoping done was to adjust brightness.

Anyone get any pics of the meteor shower last night? I tried, but failed miserably. It was too bright around my area.

I really need a tripod before I go to Asia. I have a monopod, but that won't help with minutes of exposure I love macro photography and long exposure photography. I don't really have any long exposure right now, due to lack of tripod

you don't always need a tripod ... 3 of the 7 pics i posted were done without a tripod. All you need is a stable surface, and keep in mind that you can crop the picture later

I really like the first one ... the angle is really nice, and the colors all came out too. I've been trying to make my shots look like that for some time.

If you don't mind me asking...
What kind of setting did you use? Any filters? Lens? Camera?

I'm assuming you mean this by the first shot.

Pic was taken either with my 50mm f/1.4 or 30mm f/1.4 on a tripod. Canon 30D with remote shutter and mirror lockup. Manual Mode, f/8, ISO100, don't remember the shutter speed but I think it was something like 5 seconds or more. No filters or anything.

The picture is actually a vertical panorama consisting of three pictures stitched together.

After stitching the picture I desaturated all of the colors except for the yellow and reds to really bring attention to the road. I used CS2's shadow/highlight filter to bring out some detail in the shadows, and then sharpened with Smart Sharpen and USM. And that's it

I should have said - it was on AUTO - a P&S shot resting the camera on the deck rail. The noise is not really a problem for a DVD slide show - which is where it was used.
