I used to

but it got expensive

wish they would start taking paypal for payment and if they did that I would start using the service again

plus shipping was slow as hell. when I did the 2 week trial I didn't get a game until almost a week and half into the trial.

but from what I hear they have opened up a few more distro centers for quicker shipping.

I tried it this month and it is stupid. I put like 8 games in my queue and they sent me the 8th game because it was the only one available. I didn't even really want to play it. Plus shipping time really sucked compared to Netflix.

Gonna cancel for sure.

I've only done the 15 day trial and they sent me 2 games. One of em was scratched so badly it didn't work, the other I beat in about 3 days then sent them back.

Might be worth it if you have a lot of time on your hands.

Yeah, shipping can be slow. Also, it's a mistake to add like 8 games to your queue. I only add 1 or 2, just the ones I really want to play. So far that strategy has worked pretty well as I often get new releases in the first batch that goes out (have Splinter Cell Conviction right now, just sent back Just Cause 2).

I restarted my subscription a couple of months ago and I like it for the most part. I've already saved a ton of money on games that I probably would've bought and wished I hadn't. I do the same thing Thraxen does in that I only add 1 or 2 games I really want to play instead of filling up the queue completely.

+1 for just adding games you WANT to play. I re-signed up for gamefly to play all the games I don't want to buy, mostly the games with no good multiplayer.
It doesnt' ship as fast as netflix but it gets the job done for the most part.

This. Absolutely necessary. I don't even add a game to my queue until I ship one back.

If they were as good as Netflix I'd have it, but after my first month I was disappointed. I never renewed. If you don't mind waiting for games you don't want to buy (or know anyone who did buy them) it is pretty nice.

i still dont understand the point of this service.

What's hard to understand? It's a rental service with a concept similar to Netflix but substituting video games instead of DVDs/Blu-Ray movies.

It was terrible for me. I added just 2 games to my queue and it took them 2 weeks to send me the next game and it always said it was available but took 2 weeks. After that I canceled. Maybe after they get bigger and get more warehouses I'll join them again but it was extremely slow for me.

Blockbuster just started to add a game rental option to it's netflix-style subscription plans. Anyone who's pissed at gamefly might give blockbuster a try. Too bad the physical store near me went out.

Turns out NetFlix is saying no to the game rental thing. Might be a way for BlockBuster to make a bit of a comeback.

I love it. I have only bought a few games for my PS3 but I have played hundreds via Gamefly.

I almost feel like the slow shipping is on purpose, in order to reduce the number of rentals per month. I used gamefly about 4 years ago, and it was a decent service if you play a game or two a month (way cheaper than buying) but a game or two a month was all their slow shipping could get out in time.

Also, games kept getting lost in the mail (probably stolen by people handling the mail) and eventually gamefly canceled my subscription.

I do remember they had really cheap prices for buying used games. You had to be a member, but they provided a great way to keep games you were interested in.

If a combo movie/game rental service came out, that'd be much better, I can't really justify the monthly fee for how little I play console games now.

This is pretty funny considering neither link works.

Gamefly is fine. I've used them for many years, from the PS2 days to the current gen systems. They've lost a total of one game I returned to them, and they have added numerous distribution centers so the shipping has gotten significantly better (I remember when a week was pretty typical to receive a new game from them, now it's down to 2-3 days). They simply aren't as big as say Netflix so depending on where you live the shipping is going to vary, obviously.

Sure, their software sucks and they will just send you whatever game they have the most if from your queue, which can be a bit of a surprise if you are used to Netflix and always getting things in order; but this is quite easily circumvented by manually controlling your queue by only adding 1-2 games you want at a time, and considering these are GAMES and not movies you should be investing more than a day or so of time into them.. well, a little less true for PS2/xbox games, I guess now that most games are two years of production and five to ten hours of gameplay that statement isn't TOTALLY true, but for the typical person who actually has a job and shit to do outside of said job and can't devote 12+ hour spans of time every day to gaming you should still only need 1-2 games a week, if that. Regardless babysitting your game queue manually may be a PITA, but you should only be doing it once a week at the minimum, and if you're too ADD to do that then you should probably seek help anyway.

The biggest downfall to Gamefly is that it often takes them a week to recognize a returned game. With Netflix they partner with the post office so the moment it's picked up USPS centers scan the bar codes and Netflix recognizes your DVD as "returned" immediately, even though they have yet to actually receive the physical disk, which means your return is recognized as early as the next day.. whereis Gamefly even to date I wait a week or more for them to recognize a game as received after I sent it back to them.

There is realistically no need to keep a game library of modern games, as even the heavy multiplayer games play themselves out rather quickly and the online communities become ghost towns, and the buy a game and trade it in for credit to a new game was a lot easier to stomach when games were $40-50 as opposed to the $60-70 they are now (as the trade-in values have not changed, but the retail prices have, causing the value of buying to trade in later to reduce significantly).

All in all, $20/m for two at a time and I can easily go through 5 games a month, or just one or two if I wanted, it's still FAR cheaper than constantly buying games at $60+ just to shelve them. You have the benefit of trying lots of the b-class not 5-star rated games that you would otherwise not justify buying, and every now and then they turn out to be pretty damn fun, making the whole thing worth the effort. Plus I can (and do) frequently take a game I've completed and give it to a friend who can then beat it and mail it back at their discretion.

It's a good service. Not great, but it's made enough improvements over the years to justify me continuing to pay for it.
