Anyone use the Slot-T?

I have a Slot1 BX machine running a P2 at our youth group. (Some parts even donated from AT!)
It's sluggish, even for net surfing (thanks to some FLASHy sites.)

I plan on getting a shuttle/gbox/MEGA in the coming year, but for now I'm strongly considering upgrading this BX machine using this Slot T I've heard about. I checked the MFR's website a few months ago, I forget who they are now, and it's listed as compatible with my mobo.

That slot T and a Tulatin Celly ~ 1GHz would not only be a big speed boost that'll keep us happy until I can afford one of the up-and-coming boxes - it'll also add tremendous resale value to this machine! It's in a nice case with lots of PC-100 RAM and a decent hard drive. As a P2, I'd be lucky to get $200CDN for it. As a GHz P3-level machine, I could easily get ~$450C which would go a long way towards the upgrade!

Considering that the expenditure would be only ~$100CDN for slot & CPU, that's a good deal.


BUT DOES IT WORK? (And where in Canada can I get one?)

Never seen the name itself before. Looks pretty much the same as PowerLeap's adapters, but cheaper. I'm sure it "works" as far as putting a newer processor on an older board is concerned. Dunno where you can get it in Canada.

You can get a Duron 1.1GHz and an ECS K7S5A Pro for a total of $161CDN (plus heatsink cost) or a bit more if you don't trust the ECS brand, which would give you much better performance and let you use the rest of your parts still (so long as the motherboard/case are standard ATX layout; only two memory slots as well). Or a new P3/Celeron board would give a little better performance than using the adapter (since you could use a 100MHz bus) and cost about $167 with a 1.2GHz Celeron. The 66MHz bus that your board is probably limited to is going to reduce performance a bit.

i'm sure it works. hell on my systems i don't use slocket t's at all, i just modded the old slockets. but thats a pain i guess i didn't have a choice at the time, no slocket t, only overpriced powerleap.

if u can run at 100mhz bus, then u get default speed. pretty good actually. if u can up the fsb, u can really get a nice overclocking boost.i had my 1.1a's running at 1.49 heat isn't an issue, get retail for their coolers. if u can up your fsb, get the 1.1a, its garrantteed at 133mhz bus basically. if u can't up your fsb, get higher clock chip.

I bought some Slot-Ts that would let me move from slot P2-400s to socket P3-1.2Gs on a dual-CPU Intel N440BX server motherboard. According to the motherboard's support page, it could handle P3s. Granted the new chips themselves say "Uni-processor only," so I wasn't surprised when the system booted and only acknowledged one of the CPUs. I did find it kinda odd that it read the speed as 533MHz. I have the Slot-T run the chips at 100Mhz.

I don't have another Slot1 system to test these adatpers, but I'm not sure if I want to sell them yet. I paid $20 each, so its not like I'm hurting because of this purchase.

All the BX chipset boards I've ever seen officially support the 100MHz bus.

Maybe you're thinking of the LX chipset?

My Asus P2B 1.10 only works with the latest BIOS apparently. I flashed it and it recognizes my Celly 1.4 Tually Slot-T as a Pentium III 1.4 GHz.

My other computer is a SuperMicro BX P6SBA. I bought it new last month, but the mobo was CAD$49 (US$33) and the BIOS were several years old. The Tually Slot-T works in that too, but it gets recognized as an unknown 1000 MHz (but runs at 1.4 GHz).

You should remember though that some motherboards don't work with this setup, esp. some of the really old ones. Also, if you have a PII 233 your RAM might not be up to the task.

No, I just missed the BX part and was thinking Pentium2 in a Slot1 couldn't possibly be in a board supporting anything like a performance bus.

someties they do report wrong in bios, kinda funny. one of my comps claims i have a 1.5ghz p2 the other shows some lower mhz 600~mhz or so, with an insane 200+mhz bus speed hah! its all bs though, its really 1.5ghz.

I got one running on a Abit BE6 (first version) with no problems. Actually, because the power supply is on the side of the case, I can only get 2 of the 4 screws in because the heat sink is in the way. Got a Celeron 1.3 Ghz.

There was someone on the Anand FS/T forum that sold modded slotkets + cpu + hs/f kits for REALLY cheap. I recommend you to check up on your compatibility from PowerLeap, and then buying a kit from him.

And those Tualatin Celerons, they are clock for clock just as good as Coppermine P3's.

I can't think of any reason NOT to now! Not only do I get great performance at a low price, it also boosts the resale value much more than the price of the upgrade itself!

He could get a K7SEM or K7SOM for < $140 CDN. As seen here.

I did a little searching and found a Celeron 1.4 tulatin for $87 at one place. If they pricematch, I'll save over $20.

So, $87+31= $118 + 7% tax + shipping

And that gives me a machine that can easily run with a P4 Willamette setup! And I can resell the machine for close to $500 I would hope. All in all, this is gonna' be one smokin' machine that'll keep me pacified until I can sell it and get a SFF machine to tote around.

I have the same motherboard, and just purchased a PIII to go into the Slot-T. I held back purchasing the Heatsink/Fan, until I saw the clearance of the whole apparatus in my system. What cooling do you use? Does it seem like most HS/f's would fit? Actually, I am assuming that I use FCPGA Cooling, but I just had a thought: maybe it's Slot-1? Can you help?
