Isn't it kidnapping or some other crime, even if the girl said she went willingly? I can't imagine that an adult can leave with a 15yo girl without permission from her parents, and walk away from the incident.

Gregg, kidnapping is Federal if she ever crossed state lines. If not, state law would apply, and some do have the death penalty/life for that crime.

Hurting a kid is, to me, just about the worst thing a person can do. People who do that should be executed by the most painful manner possible and then they can rot in hell for eternity for all I care.

I'm not jumping to any conclusions about this particular case, but I have no sympathy or mercy for people who hurt children. If it turns out that Elizabeth Smart was hurt by this person, he deserves whatever happens to him. Actually I kind of hope he just gets sent to prison (if he is guilty). I've heard that even hard-core criminals don't like people who hurt children. Spending 40 or so years with those people would be far worse than any punishment we could give.

The news just said that she told police that she was took against her will up into the mountains til things cooled off. She then was taken to San Diego, Alanta, Alaska, Hawaii, and such.

What was the motive for this whole thing? Most crimes of this sort end in violence or some screw loose ransom scheme, but don't drag on. Why did he keep the girl for so long? Still doesn't add up.

Had a 14-year old girl from a less affluent family been abducted, it's probably pretty safe to say news of the abduction would not have been plastered over the news as was the case with Elizabeth Smart. Indeed, around the time Ms. Smart was abducted, another girl in Michigan turned up missing but didn't receive nationwide media attention. I'm afraid I don't recall this other girl's name because, well, her abduction story was only mentioned as a small footnote one evening. So I have to wonder...Had this other girl been found today instead of Ms. Smart, would, for instance, NBC News have interrupted local broadcasts with this "Breaking News" story? Somehow I doubt it.

Bottom line is, while I'm happy she's been found, but all the attention given to Ms. Smart and her plight only reinforces the notion that money makes all the difference in the world.

I've been listening to Elizabeth's aunt talking on MSNBC and I've been crying... It is just so heartbreaking and heartwarming... I can't imagine the emotions that they are feeling today!

I'm so glad she was found alive. Now put that scumbag into prison with a bunch of murderers. They do NOT like child molsters...
