Yes, you are right. AM frequencies travel farther because of longer wavelength.
FM is line of sight…why you’d lose reception in tunnels and such.

AM output can readily skip off the ionosphere at night, giving the potential for their broadcast to travel hundreds upon hundreds of miles. Used to get Chicago and some Mexican in GA at night.

In daytime, AM distance is limited to their ground wave. The ionosphere absorbs most of what hits it.

But nighttime….you can hear some of the strangest things on AM.

My good buddy who has driven around this country many times by now said if you put on the AM radio on in the south or in texas or what not, pretty much when you get outside of a big city's limits, shit gets reallly fucking scary really fucking fast on AM radio. Like frightening if you are a somewhat rational and decent human being that is.
Been a long time, but 20 years ago I drove all over the place where AM was the only option. At least back then it wasn't all crazy until the night. At night it was nothing but conspiracy shit. Like lizard people conspiracy shit. I used to enjoy getting the harvest updates, though.

I suppose I'd use radio -- either AM or FM -- in conditions warranting real-time weather information, but I could get that anyway with my cell-phone and internet. I long ago tired of listening to some DJ's choice of music on FM, but it was also a good mood-enhancer with the right station playing the right tunes. Since I retired, more so since I upgraded my old Trooper with its own Android tablet and SDXC card, I want my own selectable music collection. In fact, I now have three selectable music collections for the old Trooper, so I can queue them like a party disc-jockey and pick any of the three by pressing only a single button.

But I DO remember the old days, with the morning 6AM run up the Shirley Highway to work:

"YEAHHH! Boys and Girls! This is DEE-CEE ONE-OH-ONE, Bethesda -- on your FM dial . . . .
"And I'm the Grease-Man -- Nino-"Grease" Minelli!!"
"Ah jus' came in with my breakfast!"
"Got them CHILI-DOGS . . . with UN-YUNS! Gotta have them Chili-Dogs! For breakfast!"
"And now -- to get your mind off work while you're drivin' to work -- comin' up -- Van Halen, and 'Drop-Dead-Legs! Followed by "Dirty Movies" and "Girl Gone Bad"!! Whuuu-wowowa! Hobble-de-Gee!! Hobble-de-Gah! And!!! . . . . . . GOBBLE-de-Gee!!"

What are they going to save a whole $.15 a radio. Seriously.
It costs a lot more than that especially as the transition to electric vehicles becomes more prevalent. Electric vehicles require more shielding than traditional internal combustion engines because of the interference the electric motors have with the AM bands.

One of the major reasons Ford dropped it on the 2023 Mustang Mach-E is because of the amount of complaints they received about reception quality on the 2021 and 2022 models. They later back peddled and issued an over the air software update to add the AM bands back into the 2023 model year but I can tell you from experience I can see why they wanted to not have it.

The problem is a bit larger. The question should not be, will it cost 15 cents to improve radio reception, but rather it is "why are we letting EVs get away with producing the harmful interference".

It's not the AM radio itself that needs *fixed*.

I know it (AM band EMI) is inherent to the prevalent designs, but we sort of ignored this in a rush to embrace EVs.

If my car doesn't have an AM radio and I want one, I can add it, as just another audio input. The vehicle should not interfere with its reception.

Move the power controller and shield it. Corvette figure out how to shield ignition noise.

I haven't turned on a car radio in nearly 20 years. I don't have any interest in "talk radio", listening to idiot DJs blithering, or annoying advertising. Which is almost 100% of the broadcasting in my area.

Music would be nice. Or some kind of news I was actually interested in. Nah, I'll just zone out in peace. I'm done with radio.

Does the ignition noise on a Corvette produce the same amount of interference as a vehicle with 2, 3, or even 4 electric motors does?

I'm not sure but hey if you think you got it figured out don't explain it to me. Let Tesla, Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, Mercedes Benz, BYD, and slew of other manufactures in on it.

And that's it -- for me! My old Trooper is my only escape! Today, I drove down to the truck farm to buy vegetables, swung by the grocery deli for some fried chicken, and took the long way home for today's entertainment -- a John Coltrane album.

We could enjoy radio more when we had to interrupt our driver attention to flip a CD or a cassette tape, or -- being younger and more stupid -- we just had to have that real-time news fix.

There's nothing there but talk radio, mostly fundamentalist christian, or right wing wacko/conspiracy/nutjob stuff.
Uh huh. And who do you think is buying the bulk F-150 trucks? City dwellers, in the liberal coastal states? Or people in the "fly over" states??
