Hey all,
Just thought I'd throw my 0.02 in here. Please be kind, this is my first post.
I'm a computer science major, and I work overseeing the everyday operations of a nice chunk of my campus' computer labs, as well as working on hardware repair and campus networking. I've seen all brands, OS's, configs.....pretty much, you name it, I've seen it!
I, personally, like the iMac. I can understand that a lot of people hate it, and I'm not trying to change their opinions. I own the Graphite iMac 600MHz, slot-loading CD-RW machine, equipped wtih 256MB RAM. I run Mac OS X on it......and love it. I think the iMac is a really great buy. If your trying to save some cash, go after the 600MHz machine. Also, they offer a free 128MB stick of RAM in that deal too! If you all can wait, I'd wait. They're talking about some great stuff with the new iMac.....I'm even jealous! Faster clock speeds, possibly the 133MHz system bus (long time rumor for this machine), 14" flat pannel display, new nVIDIA cards....etc. Also, they're coming out with new G4 towers (rumors of the 1GHz G4, data doubling RAM, nVIDIA 3 cards standard, etc). There are also strong rumors of a $1,900 *NEW* notebook coming out...... a cross between the iBook and PowerBook......should feature a 14.1" active matrix display.
If your interested in running Mac OS X, consider the G4. I'm doing some testing of it for the campus newspaper on a 450MHz G4 Cube (yes, the infamous Cube).....and it just flies! That machine never ran so well! Even on my 600MHz G3, its pretty sweet. The G4 has a stronger, smoother feel at times, but I also demand a lot out of my machine. In all honesty, besides for updating the OS (I run 10.0.4 now), I haven't had to restart my machine since OS X was installed on it, on March 24th. I am really looking forward to seeing Mac OS 10.1 (code-name Puma) in July. I see what Apple was able to do since OS X Beta was released, and believe me, its absolutely amazing! I bought OS X Beta because I just need the newest always.......Aqua was great.......system was strong......but I was so dissapointed in it's performance. It was sluggish, it stalled at times, and I reverted back to 9.x. Now, I don't even use the OS 9 shell. Combine that with the soon to be released OS 9.2, with the improved carbon support (what allows OS X to run OS 9 apps), and there really is a nice amount you can do with these machines.
I'm not too sure about the machines locking up, like "daniel" posted. Yeah, OS X still is buggy at times, but I've never had any consistent trouble. Heck, my friend and I did our own stress test on OS X Beta, to see just how strong it's new features were. We were able to run *42* applications, along with the 9 shell, and open multiple servers on the desktop, and the machine was still moving.....and that was Beta running on a 500MHz G3, with 128MB RAM.
Hey, it was my frist post, I had to get all that out of me! Finally, a posting member of Anandtech......does it get much better?
