I don't see that. Apple had been very good about keeping older phones up to date with OS updates. Of course older stuff doesn't get all the new features because of hardware restrictions. I imagine they will do the same here. Future version will have more accurate sensors, additional sensors, faster CPU, more battery life, etc. to entice people to upgrade. I can't imagine they will say you watch won't work because of an OS update. That's stooping low even for Apple.

you don't even know bro!!! My iPad 1 is sooooooooooooooooooooooooo slow. Goddamn forced obsolescence!

Are you being serious? Cuz the iPad 1 was slow even by 2011. Crippled at launch with single core CPU and 256 MB RAM.

I made a point not to buy it and waited one year for the iPad 2 instead. Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo glad I did. Got twice the CPU power and twice the RAM with the iPad 2.

This just in: Apple will be announcing a new sarcasm meter at their event on September 9th. Preorders will begin September 10th, with delivery straight from China expected by end of the month.

I see. The reason I asked was because that was a real complaint by some a couple of years ago, wondering why their iPad 1s got EOL'd so early.

It's kinda sad but the one thing that would excite me the most would be Apple making 32GB the base storage capacity. 16GB is insufficient in this day and age, especially if they're going to try advertising 4K recording and whatnot.

Not sure I agree with that, my current phone (not an iphone) has 16gb and still has about 8gb free space.

Now, 8gb on the other hand. THat's too little

I've never understood why Apple insists on being so chintzy with RAM. They seem to be a couple gens behind Android devices in that reguard. I get that iOS manages memory better but you're still dealing with a finite resource. It does make a difference. Especially browsing with multiple tabs.

Because people are morons when it comes to actual RAM usage. There is no need for a well managed phone to use 4+ GB of RAM. I agree 1GB is starting to be a bit long in the tooth, but having multiple gigs in 2013 is ridiculous on a phone.

Exactly what usage pattern are you guys having that is causing RAM issues? I ask, because I never run into any problems. I've heard silly things like "when I have multiple tabs open in Safari and then try to view them with no network connection, I can't because they are stored in RAM forever." Wtf? Why on Earth are you consistently without any network connection?

They've always done this. For example, look at how iBooks or MacBooks were configured. Even Pro laptops had relatively modest memory configs until recent years. It's all about profit margin, even at the consumer's expense.

I'd be happy with 1.5gb of ram. My wife has a 6+ and it feels very smooth with just 1GB, but for future proofing I would prefer at least 1.5. Especially for phones that are so expensive

When I have multiple Safari tabs open, the tabs may reload when you switch back and forth between them. (Yes, this happens when you're still connected to the network.) This drives me up the wall in certain situations... which just happened on my phone just now... like when you're making a post and then decide to switch to another tab to check something out or to copy a quote, and then switch back again. If the tab you were making your post in reloads, then suddenly you've lost everything in that post and have to start over. This is really, really aggravating, and happens much less often on the iPad Air 2 which has 2 GB RAM.

One potential way around this in the future on my iPad Air 2 would be to use Split View in iOS 9. That keeps both screens side-by-side and active. The main problem with this is that Split View currently doesn't allow two instances of Safari to be running at the same time. However, hopefully that will be supported in the future, or perhaps you can run two different browsers in the future side-by-side. But at least right now you can run stuff like Mail and Safari or Notes and Safari at the same time. And guess what? Only iOS devices with 2 GB RAM support this feature... which means only one device, which is the iPad Air 2.

Just like I refused to buy the original iPad with 256 MB RAM, I refused to buy the iPad Air with 1 GB RAM. I'm sooooooooooooooooooooooooo glad I did in both instances, because I tend to keep my iPads a long time. Or maybe I keep my iPads a long time because I can, because I made the correct hardware choices at the time of purchase. Just like for computers, RAM is very important iOS devices.

BTW, Slide Over in iOS 9 is kind of annoying. Yes you can slide over another app over your currently running app, but it's almost the same non-multitasking of previous generations because it greys out your running app. This is what the 1 GB iPads get. Unfortunately, as you might guess from my description, it's not anywhere near as nice as Split View, and as mentioned, it's not true multitasking.

That's exactly what I'm talking about.

I don't use Safari because I find its feature set rather limiting. Was using Mercury, which was a great browser up until I upgraded to iOS 8.3. I think it suffers from memory leaks as it will randomly crash after awhile. This is on an iPad 3 with 1GB RAM.

If you browse on desktop mode, some sites can be resource hogs. They hired some fresh out of college graphic designer instead of a proper web developer. So they look pretty but chew through megabytes like they're going out of style. So if you have more than a couple tabs open, that will crash the browser. Or force the others tabs to reload. This is a real pain if you're writing up a post on here while researching stuff.

The way I see it, RAM is a fairly cheap upgrade for the manufacturer. Adding 2-3GB across the line wouldn't break the bank for Apple, and it would help with a lot of usage cases.

Actually, they'd fill 16GB twice as fast. Which is my point.

Of the handful of iPhone users that I personally know very well (including my wife and my mom), none of them knew anything about Google Photos or any other free cloud photo storage service. My mom signed up for additional iCloud space without even realizing it. My wife's phone is always at or near maximum storage capacity. She has zero games on her phone, it's just photos and videos. So if the 6S is coming with improved camera specs, having that same pitiful 16GB of storage will be even more restricting. I don't get why anyone would try to defend this, it is simply Apple blatantly milking their fans for even more money, either to spend the extra $100 for 64GB, or to push them towards purchasing iCloud storage. There's no excuse, 32GB should be the minimum in this day and age, especially for how much these things cost.

The type of user you're talking about would fill 128GB just as well. They don't need that much space because they aren't actively using it.

Supposed ATV4 specs:

http://9to5mac.com/2015/09/02/apple-tv-4-2015-specs/

I still think they have a huge market for a lightweight set-top gaming device. I have a Roku 3 with a motion control & it's better than my old Wii was for accuracy (comes with Angry Birds, works awesome!). I've used a couple Android set-top boxes (Mad Catz etc.) & they are pretty much junk. I like the 360-esqe controllers, but the GUI is terrible & there's no consistency between games for gamepad support & being able to navigate using a controller.

Steam has taken their sweet time coming to market with Big Picture, so unless they team up with Apple for living room gaming (which would be amazing!), Apple is going to rule the market. That, plus I love the pricing on the games. Most are only a dollar or two, maybe six or seven bucks at most, but nowhere near the $59 pricetag of a lot of console games.

New Apple Watch sports bands!!!1

http://www.macrumors.com/2015/09/02/new-apple-watch-sport-bands-september-9/

Apple TV?

iPad will come later.

9to5mac is claiming new iPads Sept. 9, including iPad Pro.

http://9to5mac.com/2015/09/02/ipad-pro-sep-9-ipad-mini-4-november/

Apple’s September 9th event is set to be one of the company’s largest events in history, as is reflected by the expansive size of its San Francisco venue. Besides a pair of new iPhones, the substantially revamped Apple TV set top box, and new bands for the Apple Watch, Apple is currently planning to debut a pair of new iPads at next week’s event: the long-rumored iPad Pro, and a refreshed version of the iPad mini, according to trusted sources…

Actually if this turns out to be true, I'm glad. I always thought having separate iPhone and iPad events was stupid.

This is probably the most exciting Apple event for awhile...I think the ATV will be the highlight if they really do gaming...

I agree, cord cutting is in the news again, and if Apple has a dynamite product here that integrates all the Netflixs Hulus Amazon Primes, HBO Gos and all the different Sports packages out there, they could really make a mint and finally diversify from the iPhone a bit.

More are more people are saying that the iPad Air 2 is not going to be refreshed, just that the iPad Pro is going to get introduced and the iPad mini is finally going to be brought up to iPad Air 2 specs.

If that happens I'll get to feel smug again for a while with my iPad Air 2 purchase.

Maybe I don't tab browse enough on my phone, because I don't run into this problem. When I am using multiple tabs, I am not switching between them often.

On my iPhone, I feel like I'm racing against a time bomb if I try to quote text in tab #2 to post in tab #1.

On my iPad Air 2, there is still a bit of this feeling, but it's less stressful, because the tab reloading occurs much less often. Plus it is easier to see how many tabs are in use, since the tabs are always on-screen. On the iPhone they're hidden, so I might actually have a half-dozen tabs open already that I had forgotten about.

Why doesn't Apple just toss in tons of memory. Two reasons: cost vs. effectiveness and power usage. To be fair, memory doesn't use as much power as a SoC running at full bore, but it also uses memory fairly consistently as volatile memory requires constant power to keep its contents active. However, it's important to keep in mind that there's an overall power envelope that Apple wants to hit and everything counts. If they can shave off power somewhere to give another area a boost (including runtime), they'll take it.

Memory will become far less of an issue once resistive memory comes into play at a proper price point.

Wonder if there's any chance we'll see a Skylake refresh in the macs.

I was reading articles about the mobile Skylake CPUs, and it looks like the laptops may not see a refresh until next year. That's based upon how articles stated that the eDRAM-equipped CPUs won't be out until Q1 2016.

New iPhones reportedly have 7000 series aluminum, whatever that is. Where's my sapphire display and Liquidmetal?
