Applying a heatsink

Ok. I was not able to find anything (maybe I'm just blind), about applying a heatsink for Athlon processors. As far as what to do, what not to do. Do this, Do that. I was wondering if anyone knows a link that will help explain this?

OR

Answer me a few questions:
For applying the heatsink, should I remove the alumunum label/cover on the processor first, exposing the dye?
What should I watch out for when doing so? What to touch, what not to touch?
I have some thermal compound, does that just go strait on the dye?

Any other useful info would be great.

Websites of heatsink manufacturers typically give directions, check a couple out.

Don't do anyhting to the chip at all, apply a small bead of thermal compund and spread it over the core of the CPU. Depending on the type of heatsink, make sure that the lip on the base of the HS is lined up with where the socket changes depth. Hook the end of the heatsink that doesn't have a slot for a screwdriver (or a tab or whatever it has to help bend the clip) onto thetabs, then bend the clip to attach to the other tabs.

Question now. I am using some thermal compound I bought seperately. Should I just apply it on to the dye or onto the heatsink. There was also this comment in the pdf:

Just scrape off the phase change stuff and put on your own stuff. If you're really anal you could sand the HS with some extra fine sandpaper or steel wool after scraping off the factory compound.

In getting anal, when lapping w sandpaper, make sure your'e not using finger, take an absolute flat rectangular surface that is bigger than the HS and make sure it gets even, if you just lap the area where the cpu makes contact, you could end up getting it shrewd. use different degrees of sandpaper and get that mirror-shine in the end. Try getting hold on ARCTIC SILVER, as compound btwn HSF and CPU. It is fairly cheap and it really conducts heat well. This is severely anal, but you will see 1 c lower systemp doing a good lapping, and sometimes when OC'ing that 1 c counts!!!
