I have been for some days at the shore, in the company of many of my fellow middle-aged Americans who are wearing not a lot of clothes, and I have a report. My fellow middle-aged Americans, we are some kind of fat.

I almost can't believe the topic title, it's too good to be true. What a self knowledge.

Of course they are!

Dutch people are quite good, and French ladies are also very nice (and that accent... MMMMM).

There are several good looking Americans, but yes there are a lot of "fat" Americans.

Im overweight I know it, but I do at least cover my fattyness up.

It makes me sick to see some 350 pound lady at the store in a 2 piece bathing suit top, and shorts! Or the 400 pound biker dude with no shirt on trying to be all buff. aaaccckkk!

Argh, another posts that regards the BMI philosophy... y'know, the one that says Evander Holyfield is fat?
It's not an effective measure as to how fat a person is, because it takes weight into consideration and that could be water retention or muscle mass...

The true way to test would have to be calipers, however, I can see that calipers aren't available to everybody so I guess! that the BMI will have to do

Nonetheless, it gets annoying seeing it everywhere! :|

<< Also, we are some kind of ugly. We are men with Rudy Giuliani-quality hair who have persuaded ourselves that the attractive solution to this is to drape the 14 remaining strands on the left side of our domes over to the right side, while gathering the 22 remaining strands on the backside of our heads into the sort of ratty little ponytail once ? ah, those were the days ? favored only by aging record producers. We are men with lots of hair who have persuaded ourselves that the ideal look is the Mullet. The Mullet is to a decent haircut as the leisure suit is to the suit; it renders the bearer not only ugly but, somehow, stupid. It is impossible to look at a Mullet-head and think: There goes a sentient being. >>

In some cultures, this might be considered beautiful!!

LOL. I love articles like that. I can't believe how many people honestly, truly consider dinner at a buffet style restaurant good eating. Most of that food is such low quality nasty grade C crap! Same goes for McDonald?s.

I can?t consider myself the most healthy eater, but I am active. I swim when I can, I walk or bike to a lot of places instead of driving, and going for 20-30 mile bike ride is my idea of a great afternoon.

Well, when at the beach, let the blubber fly, I say...

EWWWWW, this is part of the reason I can't stand the beach... Too many whales showing off WAY too much...

americans as a whole are VERY fat and unhealthy, especially compared to other people. I spent a couple weeks in europe this summer, everyone seemed SOOO thin, althought I never really saw any muscular guys..but when I got back to the states...everyone in the airport looked like lard @$$'s. Most Americans are too lazy to spend an hour in the gym but would spend two hours easy eating at a restaurant.

<< tnx. I'm 154 pounds and 1,92 meter (about 6 ft 4"?), so I'm not too fat, I'd say... >>

spatbord1uhm1 - you're 154 pounds at 6'4? That's really unhealthy... you seem to be way too thin for your own good... I suggest you get some nutrition into your body!!

Hurry, and eat up... I'm not being sarcastic either... EAT!

I eat a lot, I drink a lot (student...), but I just won't get fat. But I also sport a lot. I'm happy with it. I think being too thin is still more accepted than being too fat.

I agree that it's the quality of food we have here. You'd think for the US we would have some of the best stuff. But really, when I go to the grocery store, I get depressed. Shelves filled with "convenience" foods loaded with fat. Whole aisles devoted to chips, sodas, cookies, sugary cereals, sugary fruit drinks. Where's the real food? No wonder Americans are so fat. We have a fast-food culture that's loaded with partially hydrogenated oils, high fructose syrups, and preservatives just to name a few. And it's being marketed to us everywhere. Not only at the restaurants but also at our grocery stores.

Coming back from France, I didn't see people over there as fat as Americans yet the food is 10 million times better tasting than here. I think it was simply because it's better quality and slightly more expensive so people are more picky in what they'll eat. They're probably healthier (must be with better quality foods) than we are over here although I don't know that for sure.

This is the best part of the article:

<< My fellow middle-aged Americans, let us admit a few salient truths. One: It is a nice thing to have an 18-year-old body and a nice thing for other people to be able to look at an 18-year-old body; so, when the owner of an 18-year-old body wears a minimum of clothing, this too is a nice thing. It adds to the general attractiveness of the world and the general happiness of humanity. But (and this is the critical point), we are no longer 18. With relatively few exceptions, we should ask ourselves if we might better serve our country by putting our clothes back on. >>

Reminds me of that one episode of Boston Public, wear a bra for the good of your country

That's an interesting theory!

I've heard lots of comments from European visitors that when they first visited the US they were shocked by how fat we are.

I have some friends who studied for a period of time in the US, and without exception they came back with 'I won 10 pounds (or more) there. The food is sooooo fat. And sooooo unhealthy compared with what we're used to...'

Inbreds, especially those with an aversion to good personal hygiene like the French, don't tend to be over wieght. They smell so bad that they rarely gather in large groups to dine and when they do the stench ruins their appetites.
