i have a 2k1 GT eclipse, going on 8k miles, and it's doing fine for me right now. can't say anything about long term reliability, but older generations of eclipses seemed to have some problems in this category (sorry i can't be specific, i dont know). i dont know if this has been addressed by mitsubishi in the 3rd gen eclipse. it's fun to drive, has good power, and is very sporty. good for your early 20's or mid 40's (mid life crises).
in terms of speed, you didn't mention if it was a GT, a GS, or an RS. a GT will hold it's own, at 200hp, (205 in the 2000 model), but since the car is kind of heavy, about 400 lbs heavier than say, a toyota celica gts (180hp), this would be a driver's race. it's faster than most celicas, (not gts), most mustangs (pre '00, not GT), most integras (not gs-r), and you might hang with the new prelude(prolly not). i believe 0-60 times are in the high 6's, and 1/4 miles are in the mid 14's. (not sure, there's a lot of variation)
i get a lot of looks and compliments because of the styling of the car (kids sometimes think it's a ferrari), but it's very, very small. i would only consider it a two seater...3 is very tight, and 4 is damned near impossible.
another thing, the aftermarket for this car is not what you'd find for most other imports, mainly because of the small driver base and lack of mitsubishi support.
personally, i bought this car because 1. it looked sweet, 2. mustangs were too common in LA, 3. the celica's look i didn't like, 4. the prelude was too expensive, 5. 1.9APR/5 years.
