Are these temperatures okay?

Hi all,

I recently built my first relatively high-end rig ever... I don't have internet access on it at the moment so I have just been playing around with benchmark software that I move onto it from my laptop. No Steam, so I can't try any games yet.

Stress testing and whatnot.

The CPU loads are all good. Never goes over 55C even when running 4 threads of the Prime95 "Torture Tests" for about a half hour.

The GPU is a different story. I ran the FurMark 15 minute 1920x1080 benchmark test and it seemed to hover around 80C. I'm no expert (far from it actually), but that felt a little alarming since the card is brand new and I did pretty much everything in my power to make the case as breathable as possible. Granted FurMark supposedly pushes it to it's absolute limit and I hear 80C is reasonable under load. I just wasn't expecting it and I imagine it'll only get worse as the card ages.

With the CPU you can reapply thermal paste, get a better CPU cooler/heatsink, etc... but what can you do to improve the GPU temperatures? Does it sound like I should be concerned?

Basic specs:
Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4Ghz
8gb RAM
NVIDIA Geforce GTX 670 2gb (Galaxy)
SeaSonic 650W PSU

While I'm looking forward to some quality gaming, I'm also a little nervous lol.

Hey thanks, I'm aware of the 97C max temperature... but I'm not sure how close I can get to that before it should be a concern.

Was more curious if 80C was normal for GPU's (particularly the Geforce GTX 670) and if there's anything I can do to take it down a bit more under load.

Furmark really stresses video cards. I am assuming that you have the stock cooler on the card also. Considering that, 80C under load in Furmark is actually a very good temperature. A lot of video cards actually run a few degrees hotter than that because Furmark is so intensive.

So I think you are good to go.

80°C is not dangerous and it's not going to happen often anyway.

I have a gtx 275 and I changed the fan curve by using EVGA precision X, it's a free download and works for any card, not just EVGAs. It's pretty straightforward to use and it lets you decide the % of speed of the fan corresponding to each temperature, and then links the dots you decided with straight lines (you can't insert functions so you're going to have to place the dots if you want funny stuff ).
I did this because it would get too hot before speeding up the fan and it's not that noisy anyway.
It goes automatically to 100% if it reaches 85°C.

In the far cry 2 menu the fps are very high because the v-sync doesn't work there so if I leave it open there it will go to 80°C in no time, but it's not a problem because it doesn't get higher than that thanks to the fan settings.

If you don't feel comfortable with the temperatures you get, use this utility and set your curve so that the noise is acceptable to you but you get lower temps.
You should try with real videogames though, no game gets even close to furmark in terms of stress.

I downloaded MSI Afterburner to do this very thing. I noticed in Furmark the fan was never going above like 56% speed. I figure I could up that to like 75% after it hits 75C and probably never even hit 80.

I couldn't figure out how to use it though.
