You must have been a stellar bookworm in your student years.

Many students like me know that life is short. If you don't play a game today and die tomorrow, the last thing on your mind when your soul is getting squeezed out of the pores of your skin will be, I wish I had played that game. Most gamer students care about playing games today. The student gamer of today will be the diehard 40+ y.o gamer of tomorrow. These idiot GPU companies need to realize that and at least make 1080p 60 fps cards affordable at the $100 max price point.

I have to say that I was very lucky. There were kids around me who couldn't afford to game but loved the idea of gaming. Some of them may have bought PC hardware when they got their first paycheck. Others may have just gone on with life, married, had kids and just forgot about gaming. That's a loss of sales for the PC industry.
Ha, I've outed you. Did you write for tomshardware?

Remember this article?

Just Buy It: Why Nvidia RTX GPUs Are Worth the Money
"Life is short. How many months or years do you want to wait to enjoy a new experience? You can sit around twiddling your thumbs and hoping that an RTX 2080 gets cheaper, or you can enter the world of ray-tracing and high-speed, 4K gaming today and never look back. When you die and your whole life flashes before your eyes, how much of it do you want to not have ray tracing?"

Try telling that to kids whose parents refuse to allow gaming under their roof coz "it's a waste of time".

Oh, </deity>. Not that one again. I thought that argument had packed in years ago. Seems to not have filtered everywhere.

Gaming is actually beneficial. It helps with cognitive abilities, problem solving, reaction times and an awful lot with hand-eye coordination. I even think I read of research shoving people playing games are actually better then average drivers, because they're more used to make split second decisions.

Day 1 sales of GPUs are mostly meaningless. They need to sell these things for 2 years. The fanboys and other weirdos who buy on day 1 aren't the difficult customers that demand truly good value. Without crypto, they need to sell to the difficult customers as well to shift sufficient quantity.

Keep in mind that the crypto mining craze is in the basement right now, and yet the 7900XTX is still getting scalped for at least a 50% markup. The 7900XT, however, is still available for sale in some places. It should give you some idea of how many people there are waiting to buy the product.

Wasn't there something like 200.000 units of 7900-series available for launch? Selling out those already is pretty well done in my book.

If they had sold out of the 7900XT then I might have agreed with you. I 'm skeptical there. But the XTX is a well-priced and well-placed product, despite its "weaknesses". There are a lot of us who do not care about RT performance, and for us, it's a good card. It's faster than a 3900Ti for crying out loud, and it "only" has an MSRP of $999?

IIRC AMD's market share is in the tank. Is that not so?

It's lower now, but that was due to sales of older products. The 7900XTX is not factored into any of those numbers, nor is the 7900XT. Right now, the majority of what anyone is buying in the dGPU space would be 3000-series NV cards.

Yeah, 7900XTX scalped or OOS, but newegg does have some 7900XT cards available. Though even some of the 7900XT cards are going for more than $899, at least it seems all the non reference models are. I just hope to get a good 7900XTX for less than $1200 from a reputable seller. The cheapest Red Devil 7900XTX is going for over $1700 from an Amazon seller.

Checked Newegg again and they are out of new Ampere above 3080 and all the models they do sell are all above the original MSRP save for that one 3060 Ti.

I think what we've seen with these "sold out " cards is that 200,000 cards from each brand is a pitiful amount in a market where pent up demand has grown into a monster that will hoover up anything new coming in that was better than the old.

But I'm convinced that with patience we will see new cards at much lower prices than we might expect. It may take a while, maybe 6 months or so, but in 2023 Nvidia will have to take delivery of $ billions worth of chips that they paid for. And that means millions of cards will be pouring into the market in the middle of a recession. And AMD will have to adjust their pricing as well, to take on what might be $799 4080s. I will be holding out for that time.

4080 for $800? The wishful thinking is strong here. We'll be lucky if we get $800 4070Ti.

NVidia will likely just shuffle chips to laptops, and let cards sell slower at high prices.

It's a completely reasonable price given inflation and because the cost of making the 4080 should not really be higher than the 3080, given that it is only 380 mm2 vs 630 mm2 for the 3080 chip. I don't believe that they are paying nearly double per mm2, even though they probably signed an overly expensive contract with TSMC (at least, in hindsight).

Even if you accept that $699 was an overreaction by Nvidia to the poor sales of the 2000 series, then the price should still be at most $900 and people should really not be buying above that.

NVidia will likely just shuffle chips to laptops, and let cards sell slower at high prices.

They can do the shuffle or any other dance, but laptop sales are also down. So they get to choose between selling far fewer chips for high margins or selling more. The relatively good price for the 3080 shows that Nvidia doesn't want to sell that little and Q3 was a very, very bad month for GPU sales. With these high prices I foresee truly horrid sales that will make the shareholders revolt.

Is that the asking price or are people actually buying those? Over here, I see a scalper asking 100 euro over the normal price for a XFX 7900XTX. There are no bids. I also see two scalpers getting bids for barely over MSRP (less than 50 euro).

My prediction is that come February, they'll be in stock for around MSRP. Right now we are shortly after launch, with many AIBs appearing slow to even launch their cards, and it is the holiday period. I expect demand to drop a lot in 2023 and supply to go up.

Asking price, I haven't seen any actual sales data on whether or not those auctions/"buy it now" sales on eBay are going through. Though the prices are coming down on eBay. There's a Sapphire for like $1275 now.

I was given the impression that there is no limit to 4090 demand. They could just flood the market with 20 million RTX 4090s and they'd sell out instantly, right? I can't imagine there are that many people with $2k to blow on a GPU, but so far that does seem to be the case!

@DrMrLordX

Asking prices are useless. If I ask 1 billion for a turd, that doesn't mean that it is actually worth that much, unless I get a buyer.

My advice is just to wait it out. Good chance that in the first half of next year, we'll be looking at the current period like we are looking at the boom prices now. 'They asked how much?'

@moonbogg

Of course the demand is limited. The supply is limited too though, because the 4090 chip is just the 'trash' chip. All the perfect dies are being put in business products for now.

Entire PC graphics hardware = $ 36 billion 2021. 20 million RTX 4090 @ $2000 = $40 billion.

Psst... come here. You look like a smart fellow with a good eye for business, wanna buy a genuine bridge? Oldschool concrete, foolproof structure, beautiful architecture. Easy to expand to railroad. Color is storm gray. I only got one more to sell, the rest are all gone. It's been the best year for selling bridges to smart people.

It's often easier and cheaper to just pay the troll under the bridge, rather then buy it outright. Those things require maintenance, and trolls do first rate work on old bridges.

Oh I absolutely believe so. And it's why AMD's client business is going to be unprofitable unless they can get ASPs back up.
