Only 3G models have GPS. But the GPS can work without any data at all as long as there are maps for it to display your position.

If you are connected to either WIFI or 3G, GPS locks faster.

That's why I wanted a 3G model, but I guess the people in line before me (I was about #40) gobbled up all the 64GB Black AT&T models .

Posting from the ipad2 now. I am amazed on how fluid the device is compare to my iPhone 3G. Typing on the virtual keyboard isn't as bad i was expecting it to be. I could definitively see the device replacing 80% of tHe media consumption I do on my MBA. It's not much that it can do more, because it does not, but how it does it. For instance reading a PDF file is much more pleasant than on the air. The same applies when viewing website like the nytimes which is layered like a newspaper.

Overall I am pretty happy with this tablet.

Overall I am pretty happy with this tablet.

The only hard thing I found is trying to type in landscape mode, which is how I prefer holding the iPad 2 . I have pretty large hands, so it's really not too bad, but it does require a bit of hand stretching.

The thing I hate is the fact that I now have to go back and buy a shit ton of apps that I already own because there are different iPad versions. I literally removed around 12GB of apps that were automatically sync'd because they don't have iPad compatibility.

Another problem that I'm having is that I realized that it's impossible to trade saves between two iOS devices. How the hell is this supposed to be a Nintendo killer when I can't switch between devices!? I'm not even considering different actual games (i.e. Dungeon Hunter 2 vs Dungeon Hunter 2 HD) but games that work on both (i.e. Battleheart). I want to be able to use my iPhone when I'm out and come back and use my iPad instead.

That whole SD vs HD bit and having to repurchase apps does suck, but the devs/publishers see it as an easy way to grab some extra cash rather than simply making a universal binary. I have several RSS feeds to AppShopper, and just wait until the "HD" versions go on sale for free or something I'm willing to pay.

Perhaps when MobileMe gets restructured into a giant cloud-based multi-os system they'll implement something like Steam Cloud so your shared games are saved online, cached offline, and shared between devices. Frankly, with GameCenter integration, I could see Apple extending GameCenter's features to do just that.

Anywho. Got the ship notice yesterday for my 2nd Gen. Now I just have to brave the WalMart return lines to bring back my 1st Gen.

Never even got a chance to open my iPad 2. The lure of big profits was too great to resist.

OTOH, I don't mind waiting for the next shipment, and I can put the extra cash towards a "free" upgrade to the 64GB 3G model.

Yeah, that's pretty much what it seems like to me. Then you've got the fact that they raise the price of the apps just because they're on the iPad :\. I guess it's really hard to make those slightly larger than iPhone 4 images.

I think they almost need to do something like this or at least offer some sort of offline capability to link your saves. But I don't foresee Apple offering a cloud service for free :\. Call me a cynic, but I see them trying to milk it for a couple extra $$.

lol it's ridiculous, here we are talking about the release of iPad 2 and there's already talks of iPad 3

Seems like absolutely nothing has been confirmed about that other than some dude mentioning "iPad 3." Chances are they'll keep with the usual ~12 month schedule.

Chances are what they were talking about is iOS 5, which will transform the current two iPad generations so much that it looks like Apple is putting out a new device altogether. I know iPad 1 felt like that when iOS 4.2 hit.

No, I'm thinking more along the lines of an iPad 2 HD. Higher resolution screen and cameras. Both of those upgrades are definitely in the pipeline.

I think it makes more sense to have the "halo" product (iPhone) launch with new tech in the summer, and have the iPod Touch and iPad inherit that new tech in the fall. Otherwise, why would anyone purchase an iPad for Christmas when the upgrade is around the corner?

Same reason why you would purchase a MacBook Pro on the same Christmas knowing that there will be a revision in three months.

Apple has never ever released two hardware revisions to the same product in less than 10 months. Ever.

They didn't even revise the iPhone 4 knowing the antenna issue.

And they stated "2011 is the year of the iPad 2". I think that's about enough indication that there will only be the iPad 2 this year.

If you still have doubts, people were rumoring an iPad 2 by Fall last year, too. Only iOS 4.2 came out in Fall.

Rgardless of whether it's Christmas or not, there will still be people buying the iPad 2. If anything, the iPod Touch and its lower price point makes a more enticing gift than the iPad.

I'm getting the iPad 2. It has solved the main issues with the original iPad, which included that iPad's extreme slowness, and the lack of cameras.

I will replace a G4 iBook couch surfing machine. No Flash is an issue, but the iBook was useless with Flash anyway, and the importance of Flash in 2011 is much less than it was in early 2010.

Note though I already have a MacBook Pro.

Yes, they have, many times in fact.

Yep. Got my the 1st gen two weeks before the 2 came out. Took it back the day they announced the new one, and got full credit back in a card. Then turned around on launch day and got mine. Had to pay for it with my time, which ended up being close to 3 hours in the cold, but at least they served starbucks coffee, and chocolates while we waited...

Just a plug, love mine. Loved the first one. As a Systems Engineer, it allows me to take just my ipad around when i am off. I dont have to lug my heavy 6lb hp notebook with me. Especially now that i got my serial adapter for it. 8)

Next time you get the urge to buy, check out the MacRumors Buyer's Guide, and the various rumour sites, esp. if the item is already 11 months old.

For example, I'd expect a MacBook update before the summer.

So I got a chance to play with the iPad 2 a lot this weekend.

Picking it up wasn't too bad. I got to Best Buy at about 3:15 to a line of ~50. By 5 the line was to at least ~250 and wrapped around to the back of the building.

The thing is crazy thin. Feels really, really good to hold. Love the cover.

I have come to realize that this is how video chat is done. It's not done on a phone where you have to hold your arm up. For some reason when doing Facetime on a phone it almost feels awkward, kind of like someone is in your personal space because all you see is their face. On the iPad, I set it on my coffee table using the cover as a stand and it gets a view of most of my couch. When doing facetime with friends its like we are all in the same room... Coolest feeling ever. We find ourselves turning it on and hanging out for an hour at a time, chatting about the previous night etc. Maybe the luster will wear off some, but I honestly don't think so. It really FEELS like you're with the other person.

Garageband is the coolest app of all time. Amazing implementation. Intuitive. Hours and hours of fun.

The apps look great. I downloaded one app optimized for iPad2 called Real Racing HD 2 (look it up), and the graphics are stupid good. There is 16 person online multiplayer that I haven't tried yet, but it looks fun.

All in all I'm loving the device. The hardware is fast, but like I've said before, it isn't about hardware as long as apps run with fluidity. It's about apps - that is ALL it is about. You don't buy this thing to do nothing on it, you buy it to run apps, and Apple has a shitload of them.

I'd say that my least favorite aspect is probably the "smart" cover. It stays on well when it's covering the screen, but when you fold it back, there's really nothing to hold the cover in place. My iPad 2 is actually rotation locked with the "hinges" of the smart cover on top, so the cover doesn't dangle so much.

Another issue is with the cover as a stand... it's too small! When you stand the iPad upright and attempt to use any controls near the top of the screen, you need to be careful since you are applying force very far from the fulcrum, which can (and has made mine) topple over. I'm assuming this is a non-issue in the typing stance since part of it is on a hard surface.

^^^ I wondered about that. That's why I ordered this:

Hopefully it doesn't suck. One potential problem with it I can see is that if you use buttons on the left upper or right upper end I could see it wanting to fall over too, but at least at the top middle it may be relatively OK. (It was inexpensive so if it's not great I won't cry over the cost.)

I won't know for a while yet though, since I haven't received the stand yet, and I can't even order the iPad 2 in Canada until near the end of the month.

eBay.

"Metal Foldable Stand for iPad Samsung Tab"

I have no illusions about it. I expect it to be flimsy, but for $17 shipped I thought I'd take a chance.
