ARGH!

I am sure I will get flames and be called many different names. This might even be a repost of other rants along the same lines but too bad. Turn away now if you don't want to read it.

I work in a building with about 750 people in it. All but 12 speak english. The 12 are the janitorial staff. They are all spanish speaking. We have been given a memo to write "BASURA" on anything that is trash so that the staff will know it is trash. I honestly don't have a problem with letting them know what is trash and what is not. My problem comes where they want 738 people to learn the word for Trash that only 12 people use. Why not have the 12 learn "TRASH"?

Just to pour salt into my already festering wound... The night I got the memo about BASURA I go to Sonic for a burger and a shake. I am annoyed by the music on their PA so I turn on my radio and listen to my station. The carhop comes out with my food and I turn my music off and pay + tip her. Then I realize why the music was annoying... It was spanish music. Sounded like I was at El Chico. I actually got mad.

I am not racist, prejudice etc... I just have expectations. I have been to Mexico and I learned basic spanish for that trip. I have been to Portugal 5 times. The first 2 times I didn't know the language and stayed in the tourist areas. The last 3 times, I know basic conversational portuguese and I now venture out and deal with the non tourist industry locals. If I were to move to Mexico or The Azores, I would learn their language inside and out and use their words for trash, not mine. Why is it expected that people that move to the US aren't expected to learn english?

I don't blame you for getting mad, people who are citizens of the US are expected to know at least some english. Having them learn the word trash would not be hard.

maybe it is because native english speakers feel they are "too good" for those kinds or jobs


as for the music if the staff is there all day i don't see why they can't listen to the kind of music they like as long as it offends no one

I for one would be thankful that they are willing to do their jobs for their wages

edit: the trash thing is pretty dumb i will give you that but I don't see why you are so hostile about about the music thing

you have a valid complaint with your company. sounds like it's too worried about being PC and avoiding a potential (and stupid) lawsuit. if they had some common sense, they'd realize teaching 12 people to recognize "trash" is much more cost effective than wasting the time of 750 people.

EDIT: But citizens should be able to speak some English IMO because it's the most widely used language.

if we have boxes laying in the hallway or in our cubes/offices our janitors tape a sign on it that says

Si or No


and we circle si or no so they will know if it is trash or not. :disgust:

yes, i feel your pain. people always approach me speaking spanish and think that i actually understand them.

sure, i may be living in the most diverse city in the country, but people need to stop assuming that i know other languages. even if you don't know much, use basic english. chances are you'll waste fewer words that way. :|

(i'll bet that these spanish guys do know enough english to get by. if not, that's pretty sad...)

Your rant about the trash issue is valid. That does seem pretty stupid and I agree that you should at least know basic English or the common language of the country you happen to be in, especially if it relates to your job.

However, complaining about the music at Sonic just makes you sound like an assbag.

I don't even want to think about how much extra money my daughter's school has to spend on ink/toner due to EVERY SINGLE piece of paper being sent home having english on one side and spanish on the other.

ya.... i speak 0 spanish (5 different languages however), so im completly outta the loop. It's kinda dumb to write stuff like that in spanish, i mean it's ONE word that you have to remeber. I think it's your management more so than the janitors. You can't live in the us w/o know basic stuff like that

as far as spenish music goes... i dont see your point. People working there have a teste for spanish music...deal with it.

or they must have some funky trash bins that the janitors can't recognize without the word.

At all of the Sonics I have been to in about 12 states, I am used to hearing 50's music. Sonic is generally 50's themed. Spanish music because the employees like spanish isn't part of what I am used to at Sonic and that on top of being forced to change my word for Trash at work was just a bit much for me that day.

Are you saying you never have a bad day that something that shouldn't bother you does? Since I know the answer is yes... sounds like you can sound like an assbag too.
