My main concern is that the US becomes a part of Mexico.

I'm serious! I'm concerned that instead of being a melting pot, we are going to become Mexican.

It may sound far fetched, but I'm sure it could happen.

Valid concern seeing as most of the Southwest was part of Mexico at one time.

However, complaining about the music at Sonic just makes you sound like an assbag.

You think it's the same 12 people all the time? I'm sure you can imagine the turnover in that field...

Also, yes it's probably harder to teach 12 people who don't care to learn english "trash" than 750 people who want their trash taken out to learn "basura."

What gets me is the number of hispanics (also other non-english speakers) who don't care to learn english when they come here. I know it's not the official language, but don''t tell me that's their excuse.

I totally agree with the OPs rant. We should make english the official language and end this stupid debate.

i agree with the OP. and also, when you call customer support why is there an option for either english or spanish? what about the other people from other ethnicity that phone in that can't speak english? sometimes, i feel like the US owes soemthing to the hispanics by having all these "se habla espanol" or "basura" signs about...

No it doesn't. Everyone here speaks english except for immigrants who choose not to learn it. I live in California, and we have a very large hispanic community. In high school they gave us the daily announcements over the PA in english and spanish. WTF?? We're in an American high school, where every class is taught in english (except the language classes) LEARN THE FVCKING LANGUAGE.

Do you think that's their reason?

If it were change (English as a national language) do you think there would be a plethora of people in line for ESL classes?

Somehow I doubt it...

in both instances its the fault of management

they probably hired the cheapest janitorial service they can...which is why they are hispanic..cheapest labor...

same goes for Sonic...

complain to HR i would be curious to see what their response is...

if they hired people that cost more i am pretty sure you would be upset if they started to cut back on other things at your work...especially if that meant a slight decrease in raises

I agree with the OP. I use to work in a retail office and would have cardboard boxes laying in the middle of the isles that said "TRASH" in large block letters. None of us (employees) understood why it would still be there the next morning and began taking it out ourselves after awhile until someone from another office told us that you had to write "BASURO" on it. I mean, I've never taken Spanish but I've seen enough "Piso mojado" signs to know what it means. Seriously, is it that hard to learn basic English? I don't expect them to learn how to conversate, which is a bit more difficult, but daily things that they come across as janitors? Maybe they lack common sense or lack the drive to learn something new?

While I don't see any problem having more than one language spoken in one country or region, the Basura case just makes me mad. Can you imagine an office in France asking their employees to scribble instructions in Arabic to their janitors? At least over there they decided to act, explicit forbidding some forms of cultural displays that show non-conformity with the customs of the land.

In the case of Mexican illegal immigration, I'd blame ignorance as the main reason. Some of these people have little formal education, which makes learning a foreign language a much harder task. I don't think they understand they cannot move up in this country unless they can command the English language.

This week PBS had that Do You Speak American? series. They "talked" to a women who lives in NY for 19 years and doesn't speak a word of English. She was cleaning a steel door in the street, and will die doing this type of manual labor.

They also pointed out that some Mexicans think they will "reconquer" the US southwest, and therefore they should not put any effort learning English.

Reconquer how? By not taking the basura out?

Try working in Cabramatta, Sydney, Australia!
I work in a computer store there and had to learn how to speak Cantonese so I could keep my job, which i found disturbing because I was originally employed in another suburb and got transfered after a staff member left the cabramatta store.
Now I would've had no problem with this...IF I LIVED IN CHINA, but i don't instead I live in a english speaking country where in cabramatta I was the only one that spoke it, my boss barely spoke english and I was often critized for using the only langauge i was taught to speak at school.
what made it worse was if i went to a Macdonalds or Subway to get my lunch, the girl at the counter couldn't understand me...because I spoke english, now last time I checked Cabramatta was Australia and Australian's spoke english.

I don't blame you for getting pissed and I am hispanic. I remember at my first job, I was the only hispanic who spoke engish and I was the translator for the other ones ( they were hard worker people who were doing their best to understand and I just translated if there was any kind of misuderstanding). However, the supervisor always pissed me off, he liked to always change the radio station to an 80's classic rock station. I love classic rock, but having to listen to the same freaking song everyday was a nightmare. So I got my mp3 player and asked my other spanish colleagues for some salsa and other spanish music and used my FM transmitter to block his station. One day, he came and we were listening to Celia Cruz. He got so pissed off , he thought it was the radio. It was priceless. We still do that from time to time, just to get a reaction out of him.

I do think that people who move to US should learn english, but mostly because it would benefit them tremedously. One of the people in the company I mentioned before had so much knowledge about the job and so much experience that if he would have known english , he probably would have been the supervisor. I told him that he should learn english as soon as he could because he was young (32 years old). Hopefully, he did take my advice.

Regards

ng

You should see how bad it is in certain parts of Texas. When i was kindergarden my entire class was hispanic as well as the teacher. The teacher decided to teach the class entirely in spanish. grrr.

A person that cannot write English properly complaining about people that can't speak it properly...

you made yourself a target.
