My friend got arrested at a 7/11 for using a fake ID.

I was there and kept telling him to just leave before the cops showed up and he insisted on getting his fake ID back from the guy behind the counter, he delayed for so damn long that the cops actually showed before he got out of there and cuffed his dumb ass.

Something tells me that store is not the nearest or most convenient liquor store for you.

Just curious, what is the reasoning behind laws that prevent or restrict sale of alcohol on Sundays? Seems like that has some religious influence behind it.

the grocery stores up here are very quiet places now because of all this, when you go in you don't talk to anyone unless they (the people of age) talk to you first. its a courtesy to all those that buy for us youngins.

This doesn't make any sense. Why would you get fined if it is perfectly legal?

Try living in a state that's so outdated they won't sell ANY alcohol in ANY store save beer distributors and liquor stores.

You live in Massachusetts, too? Heck, only just last year was it made possible to buy booze on Sunday. The town I just moved out of had a referendum vote in Nov to allow grocery stores to sell liquor. Not sure if it passed or not.

It failed.

He's in Canada so I don't know their laws, but in the US you have to card anyone under 27, and I believe you can get fined for selling to someone under 27 without carding them first (unless you have previously carded them).

Edit: Duh... just re-read the part you quoted. I have no idea.

Nope, PA. We're all Quakers and Amish here.. well, at least our laws are.

It took forever for good ol' PA to decide that the whole state wasn't going to turn into a drunken orgy if you could buy beer by the case on Sundays and changed that law.
If you wanted a case of beer on a Sunday you used to have to go to a bar and carry 2 six packs out at a time, of course paying 2X as much. Now if it is after noon, you can actually go to a beer store and buy a case, thank God!
I remember many Saturday nights buying the extra case and hiding it, hoping no one found it so there would be beer for the Football game the next day.

Personally, I don't see why the store should care WHO they sell it to, as long as the person purchasing it is of legal age. Whatever they do with it is their business, not yours.

The fact that the clerk would have to pay a fine out of his own pocket should be reason enough. Even though you might not agree, it's the law. Why should he have to be punished for some idiot 16yo that wants his friend to buy him cigs. Same penalties apply to waiters too.

Keep it up OP

Why would he have to pay a fine? 18 year old kid purchases cigarettes and then gives them to his friend out in the parking. Why is it the store's responsibility?

I've been to the store plenty of times with some friends that are 19 and 20 years old, and the clerk never cards them when I purchase alcohol with them, and that's the way it should be.

It only becomes an issue if I card someone who doesn't have ID then someone steps in to buy it for them. In that case the guy could by 70 yrs old and it wouldn't matter. If a party of people come in and some of them look under age but the guy asking for cigs first doesn't or has ID then we don't care. Like you said they could give them to the others later, not our problem.

I got really pissed off when I said hey to a couple of guys in a convenient store that I ran into and then when I went to buy beer the clerk said he needed their ID's too because they looked underage and to avoid liability. Needless to say, I was quite shocked and pissed off.

The Store can loose its Tobacco (or Alcohol) License if it gets 3 tickets within a certain period of time.

A ticket is one where you are caught selling Tobacco or Alcohol to underage people. Most stores will check ID for everyone as soon as they get their 1st ticket. I have seen some stores to go as far as installing Digital readers and Ultra-violet light setups to ensure that the IDs are not fake (after they have gotten a ticket)

Massachusetts does not limit alcohol sales to "beer distributors and liquor stores."

Don't know where you got that.
