ASP.NET won't email form

I have a form that's pretty simple, it just emails someone with a message and what not. The user says that about 2 weeks ago the form just stopped working. So I took a look at the code, noticed it was pointed to a old email server (which was taken offline more than 2 weeks but that's a different story) so i changed it to point to the new email server, but still get the same error- The transport failed to connect to the server. I have no idea, the mail server and web server are on the same subnet, sit right next to eachother, i tried refering to it by IP, DNS, still nothing.

I restored the code from 1 month ago just incase someone changed something, but it was identical.

Any ideas what it could be?

Does that server accept unauthenticated SMTP sessions, or are you passing authentication in the code?

We're not passing authentication through the script. Under the "Default SMTP Virtual server" properties, i have it set to allow anonymous access. Still nothing.

But does your new email server accept anonymous SMTP connections? If nothing changed on your form/web server, then it almost has to be a configuration issue on the new email server.

Yea, it does accept anonymous SMTP connections, i'm able to run a vbscript that sends an email anonymously from the same server using the same exchange server.

Is your SMTP component throwing an exception? Any chance of getting the exact exception message, as well as any inner exceptions? Maybe a stack trace?

hmm... that didn't seem to reveal anything that you didn't already say. Oh well. Are you using the IIS SMTP server, Exchange Server, or something else? Have you tried pinging the mail server from the web server? Any new firewall software installed lately?

Something about this problem seems familiar, as if I've run into it before. I wish I could remember...

However, Good News! It's fixed.

Wanna know what I did? I opened the index.aspx page in visual studio, set it as the default start page, tested it, and it worked. Unbelievable. i spent too much time on this for it to be a simple thing i could never think of being. Anyway, it's done. Thanks again.

Well... that at least proves that your code works, and that your development box can connect to the mail server. Just make sure the form works on your web server before declaring victory. Good luck, and I hope it's working again .
