I know its a Neogaf link, but thoughts on UbiSoft sending out modified copies for reviewers, then locking most of the content behind DLC as well as micro transactions.

That would explain the extra grinding needed to get better gear compared to other AC games, Ubi trying to make the micro transactions more appealing.

Bypass that $^%#, here is how:
1. Download & install cheat engine (be attentive during installation to avoid stupid toolbars.

2. Run the game 1st, tab out and start CE, click file, open process, select the game from the list.

3. go back in the game, check the amount of credits you have ( this works with the xp numbers too.

4. Tab back out to cheat engine. Type the number of credits you have into the value row on the right side (it's below the new scan&next scan button)
and hit new scan then first scan. A bunch of values with will be listed in the upper window.

5. To narrow down which memory values you need to alter, loot a body or open a chest. Now remember the updated number of credits, tab back out to CE, type in the new number and click next scan. (that way, all the values that don't match that number on the first and this scan are filtered out.

6. Final step, highlight the remaining entries (there are usually 2-6 corresponding ones) right click and choose "change value of selected addresses, enter the desired number and hit ok. go back to the game, next time you loot a body or open a chest, it will show the desired credit count.

EDIT: Added proof that it works. I gave myself 15 mil credits, I don't even want to know how much they would charge for this.

now that's how you fix micro-transactions.

That was debunked in that same thread by multiple users who had received review copies. The microtransactions weren't hidden in any way, and even though the servers were offline (so you would get an error if you attempted to engage the microtransaction), it was still very clear that you could buy progress. Kotaku even mentioned the microtransactions in their review, with screenshots from a review copy. The more troubling bit is Ubisoft running an embargo for 12 hours after the game had already gone live, presumably since they knew that poor reviews of their half-finished product might lead people to cancel pre-orders.

Nvidia Crapworks sponsored game? You defend until the death. AMD sponsored game (Dragon Age)? You sling mud in your VERY FIRST POST. The hypocrisy D:

Where did I sling mud? I made a comment about the tessellation factor being weak, and it's true. Also, unless you're totally clueless, you'd have to know that tessellation isn't AMD's strong point so obviously they aren't going to use it as much as in an NVidia sponsored title..

Also, I have Dragon Age Inquisition preordered and I'm awaiting it's release with great enthusiasm..

Unlike you, I don't have any ulterior motive. A good game is a good game period regardless of whether AMD or NVidia is sponsoring it.

dat pop in

I'm pretty sure that gif is from the PS4 version. Pop in on the PC is much more reasonable compared to the PS4 version, as the draw distance and LOD scale is longer..

Also, every game engine that uses streaming technology is going to have pop in and LOD scaling. It cannot be mitigated unless the game engine has been engineered to load the entire world into memory.

Personally I haven't really noticed pop in that much as I have the game on SSD and environmental quality is set to ultra..

So you want them to make games only for people that have that much system memory? Only about 15% of PC gamers have a double digit amount of system memory in their PC.. Majority have 8GB and under.

And what about the consoles, which are limited to only 5GB of usable RAM? Streaming technology is a good thing, although it has it's drawbacks. If game engines didn't have streaming technology, games today would be nowhere near as detailed as they are..

8GBs of RAM has been the minimum recommended RAM for gaming PCs for the past two years, and smart people have been directing people building new gaming PCs to go for 16.

Yes, but not all of that memory is dedicated to gaming. The OS uses some of that memory as well, including other programs.

To be able to pull this off, you'd need a machine with at least 32GB of memory so that all, or most of the assets could be loaded into it. And for a game as big as AC Unity, you would need even more..

But this discussion is pointless because developers are never going to do that.. Frostbite 3, CryEngine 4, Unreal Engine 4, Disrupt, 4A engine etcetera, every single of them uses streaming tech, and every single one of them has pop in and LOD scaling.

Some engines disguise it better than others. CryEngine is really good at that, but then again, it depends on the type of game too. Crysis 3 had very minimal pop in, but it was a linear game with separate levels...

AC Unity is open world and absolutely huge with seamless loading, so it's a different kettle of fish.

Hm... I chose this as my free NVIDIA game... mostly because while I like FPS games, I've never played FarCry. Not really sure why since I own them all, but that's not much of a surprise. Since I've played the majority of the Assassin's Creed games, it felt like the safest bet for the game that I would enjoy. Albeit, these performance issues are quite alarming. Unfortunately, I just haven't had a chance to try it yet. Although, I was quite annoyed to find that uPlay decides to launch a game after its installed. I kept trying to remote into my PC, but the game froze up, which meant I couldn't control anything through Splashtop. :| I was able to fix it easily when I had physical access, but it was annoying nonetheless.

I was watching a stream on Twitch, the NPC's could be male in the distance, but when you got closer they turned into females.

Performance wise, I haven't had any issues, but of course there's plenty of room for improvement. In Paris, I'm getting between 45-55+ FPS depending on where I am. In the heavily congested areas on street level, the FPS can dip down to mid 40s. In less congested areas, it's in the low to mid 50s. I only hit 60 FPS in interior areas..

... game will be very solid performance wise..

Are you kidding? 45-55 fps avg on DUAL 970s, highly clocked, paired with a 4.5 Ghz 6-core IVB-E and only with FXAA. This game looks average at best, something from 2009-2010, not end of 2014. So based on how Witcher 3 looks, should it then run at 30 fps on triple GM200s and 5960X? Based on the graphics and detail level (lack thereof) this game should run at 60 fps maxed out on a 680/7970. Instead a single 980 can't even achieve that at 1080p. Ubisoft proves time and time again they don't know how to make games.

If Naughty Dog released Uncharted 4 this broken or if the next Zelda game had constant dips to 15/20 fps, those games would get 5/10. If Ubisoft is dumb enough to sacrifice overall performance and game graphics vs. including 5000 useless NPCs, their developers should be fired. Obviously graphics cards and CPUs aren't advanced enough to have 500 onscreen characters look like Crysis 3. So guess what the solution is? Use less NPCs, make the ones you have make them amazing and interactive with personalities.

It pisses me off when professional reviewers give such broken unoptimized games mid- to high-8s. There is no way a game like this would have gotten these scores during SNES/N64/PS2 eras.

Ubisoft wouldn't be able to make a game with CryEngine 4, Unreal Engine 4 because if they did, you'd need hardware from 2020 to run it well. But once 4-5+ million AC Unity are sold, they will soon announce another one of their broken games. Most of the Internet is ripping this game apart but I guess they are all peasants cuz it's their fault for buying consoles and wanting to max out 2010 level graphics on a 280X-680 vs. sad reality of 25-30 fps on LOW on the PC!

With NV gave gamers a choice of 10-15 games so we aren't stuck choosing between Ubisoft's broken collection. While AMD gets some advantage in GE titles like Ryse Son of Rome, Dragon Age Inqusition, Civ5: BE, Alien Isolation, at least with 1-2 driver updates/patches these games run well on both AMD and NV hardware. With Watch Dogs and AC Unity, these games are just flat out broken on all hardware.

Spoke too soon RS. NVidia just recently release a new SLI profile, and now I'm getting constant 60 FPS, even in congested areas

Image was resized by the hosting site, but this is 60 FPS at 1440p maxed settings with the exception of FXAA. With V-sync disabled, I'm seeing up to 72 FPS in open crowded areas.

The game is fairly well optimized for a new title, but it just needs a few more patches and driver updates. It has the best CPU usage I've ever seen in a game. 12 threads all evenly balanced!

Encouraging. Id expected this to happen. Ubisoft has a lot riding on this game, and between gpu patches and game patches it'll be running better in no time. Thanks for the heads up.

Minimum and recommended aren't really the same thing. Certainly for the past two years very few (any?) games have had 8 GB of ram as the "minimum".

I want to add some thoughts. I had a chance to play a few hours last night on version 1.1.0.

There are some technical issues. No one will argue that. Those technical issues aside, I am very impressed with this game. When the bugs are sorted and gpu drivers & patches make the game smooth, this will be a truly impressive game.

The combat is much more difficult, at least that I could see. This is a welcome change. While the mechanics are still parry & counter as in previous games, early on in the game (at least, no idea if this changes later) a successful counter does NOT just instantly kill the enemy. Timing on counters is much tighter, making failed counters very common early on. This also means there are ACTUAL REASONS to change weapons, use smoke grenades, and do assassin-type things that didn't need to be done at all in any of the previous games. This is a HUGE improvement, and is very much game changing.

The new parkour system has quirks, but is not nearly as poor as is suggested in the reviews. The free-run down (aka - climbing down in awesome style) action is amazingly welcome, and saves the old frequent deaths from jumping from too high or the 'Run to ledge, come to a complete stop, hold b and down until you get to the bottom, fight the mechanics of a wall you cant see' pattern. Instead just run to the edge, and parkour down the wall. It's actually very awesome.

The new parkour animations are quite good too. There are a few times when I thought 'Hey, even for AC that was a ridiculous leap from there', but those are few and far between. I am fairly certain it only looks that way because Ubisoft tried to make the climbing sequences faster, which means less of the Assassin adjusting his position to launch properly as we have seen in the past. No one is flying around or anything like that, but from time to time it just looks odd.

I have not experienced any bugs other than frame-rate "bugs".

Arno is quite likeable. I'm not sure why reviewers didn't like him. There are some gaps in the first sequence story-wise that can be pieced together if you have even a rough understanding of social history, but nothing that really affects his character. He actually really reminds me of Ezio when Ezio was young. Does what he wants when he wants, smooth, charming, caring, but also selfish. Chases women like Ezio did too. I did find myself saying aloud "Well it's like the Capulets and the Montagues" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G6pdD5GyCE#t=370). But I'm a Seinfeld nerd, so there's that.

The new stealth mechanics actually make stealth much easier to use, since you now know exactly when and where whoever is chasing you saw you last.

The sandbox style approach to missions hasn't made full-form just yet - limited opportunities in sequence 1, but what is there alludes to this being pure awesomeness. It is clear that Ubisoft had a vision for what this would look like, and my initial impression is that they have delivered.

I haven't made it far enough to understand how large a deal micro-transactions are, but i'm not too worried about it.

One beef I have is how Arno moves through the crowds. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I'm basically just shoving giant mobs of people out of the way. In a game where the mobs will play such a huge role, I really hope there is a way to slide through gracefully and I'm just a noob that hasn't figured it out yet.

Textures on second highest setting are maxing out my video memory on 2 x 7970 @ 1080p, which is 3GB. Crossfire is working but my GPUs do not hit 100%. I haven't checked the CPU usage but I doubt that my 4790k is being pushed. I'm guessing bottleneck is in the textures, but haven't played with these settings much yet. Currently having 8GB of RAM, and am considering getting more if it looks like it will help performance.

I almost feel sorry for people who have had a bug free Unity experience.
I'm slowly progressing through the game, if they are all as benign and funny as these, I can live with that.

The game should look really good with tessellation and 4X MSAA/TXAA but the entry barrier for that is insanely high, even at 1080p, let alone 1440/1600p.
So far I found that the NPC's are the game's worst looking and most immersion breaking asset.

So do it. 16GBs of RAM is what, 100 bucks?

Under 15% of gamers on Steam have over 12GB of ram....
I guess we're only making games for the top 15% of gamers then and screw you if you don't have 16GB of ram.

Why stop there? Don't have SLI/CF configuration? Then don't play our games!

Why bother making a game capable of running on AMD and Intel Cpus? Afterall, we all know Intel CPUs perform better so lets just target the 4770k as a bareminimum to play games. Don't own a 8 threaded intel CPU? Too bad!

Come on man.....

Reviewers are reviewing gameplay/story though and not just graphics/FPS Dips (Which eventually get fixed). A Reviewer will just turn down the settings and play the game.

Every year they keep using that lame ass Anvil engine with a few additions here and there and every year people bite like it's going to ever get better.
