he said he didn't think he'd hit it. who knows what was going on in his mind. Maybe he thought he'd eventually scare it away if it came close? It's hard to hit a specific target when a golf ball in mid flight... getting it to land where you want is tricky enough as it is... but knowing a precise enough trajectory through the air is something only math wiz's would know, as you'd have to know exactly how high and far away it was, wind speed, etc etc. These things golfers take into account using estimations to get the ball to LAND somewhere... not hit something in mid flight. I truly believe he wasn't trying to hit it. Maybe he was... and that's f'd up. But it's the same thing as anyone taking a shotgun and shooting towards a bunch of boards to maybe hit some, but mostly to scare them away. Farmers do it a lot. See anyone get a fuss about them? And I doubt he knew what kind of bird it was. Just one that was pissing him off.

I've killed a bird accidentally when my ball landed on a flock of birds down the fairway.
Its beak was crushed by the ball, and bleeding from its mouth and eyes.
