Once I realized that this card was on the NV40 core I got to thinking, hmmm I bet this card can be unlocked/overclocked being on that core... I followed the guide and used RivaTuner to unlock some features. Looks like my core had a defective pixel pipeline.
People who are anxiously awaiting the debut of the AGP 6800GS need to take the lessons learned here to heart.

Some people may well be able to fully unlock their cards to GT-like specs, while others may get partial unlocks and still others might get nothing at all.

Yes, it's the Nv40 core, but odds-are, these are chips that "didn't cut the mustard" by NVidia's tests to be placed on GT and U cards. When you purchase the AGP GS card later this month, the money you invest is "garaunteed" to get you a 350MHz 12-pipe card... however, that money doesn't garauntee a successful unlock to a full 16-pipes (if any more at all).

Any amount you may be able to unlock is of course, pure fluff and money you saved, but don't think the price tag of the 6800GS (or any card you purchase expecting to unlock) is a bonafide garauntee to get you the full 16 pipes.

Okay, so I'm bored at work today.

I got the 6th shader unlocked. I'm not sure if it's stable or not. I got a black screen for a moment in 3dmark03, but aquamark runs fine, so does quake4.

Aquamark score went up to 48303 w/ the extra shader.

So did you use a stock fan when overclocking this card? And how did you exactly overclock this card. Can you give me a guide or some sort of direction?

Well I just ordered an eVGA 6800XT from NewEgg, I will update on how unlocking the pipelines/shaders proces goes. I plan on using Rivatuner to unlock, if someone knows of a better program please post.

I considered the Asus that Trunkks purchased, but for 109$ after the mail-in there really was no way to refuse the eVGA.

There was a typo in the ad... 350 mhz for core memory. The base core memory speed is 700 mhz for the 6800Xt... at least I hope so.

I just checked out where else they were selling these... ZipZoomFly has the eVGA 6800xt AGP for $499.00 and they are out of stock..

That makes no sense to me.

Either:

1) The rage is on and everyone wants an eVGA 6800xt

or

2) There is a mistake for the price of the unit being sold.

Can you be more specific? By how much fps wise and it what games?

Well I was fully able to unlock my AGP eVGA 6800XT using rivatuner I have 16p/6s

I have some doubt about the second pixel pipeline, it did not add the same performance value on 3Dmark03 as did the first one, which I believe is the reason this specific gpu was devaluated to a 6800xt. The first pp increased the score by 1187 points, the second additional added only 567 points, less than 50% more points. If I end up having issues down the road, I will end up disabling this pipeline.

I unlocked each pipeline and shader one at a time, tested them and then tested the group together using 3Dmark2003 to make sure they didn't have any artifacts.

My Results using the stock fan on the eVGA 6800XT (note that the settings of the fan for 2D were 60%, low level 3D 75%, and high level 3D 85%:

8pp/4s 6482 3DMarks 62C max temp -- idles at 55C
12 pp/4s 7669 3DMarks 67C max temp -- idles at 58C
16pp/4s 8236 3DMarks 67C max temp -- idles at 58C
16pp/6s 8597 3DMarks 70C max temp (seems a little hot, please comment on this if you have some advice.) -- idles at 58C

Other notes:

1. I did a complete reinstall of my system before checking this out, to make sure I didn't have any other problems with components.

2. I nearly doubled my 3Dmark03 points with the replacement of my GF4 4200 TI 64 mb Card. From ~3500 to ~6500, which I would have been happy with, if my card didn't have such potential >.

3. Overall an 32.6% increase improvement is pretty nice. I can run Q4 at medium quality and 12x10 (native LCD res) without having my fps drop below 50.

4. No overclocking yet, possibly never. The stock mhz are 300/750

The rest of my system:

2700++ AMD Socket A Barton
512 MB Corair Value Ram
Maxtor Diamondmax 9 75 GB HDD
EVGA 128 MB 6800XT
ASUS A7V600-X

you might want to invest in a after market cooler. a NV5 Silencer or Zalman VF700 both will be more effective in cooling your GPU temps than stock cooling. your scores on 3Dmark03 are pretty good, considering you're running at stock speeds.

Is this on the nv40 core?

Not sure about the core the card that is linked to.

The 6800XT has the NV40 core. However, I advise caution when purchasing a 6800XT there is no guaruntee that the card will unlock all pipelines or shaders.

Others have stated that the 6800xt is less of a card than the 6800NU, I don't know what research there is to support this but that is the hearsay.

I would recommend more research into the card before purchase. It hasn't been out long though, but I will continue to update on my progress with it.

Ya, I looked around a bit but there is not much information on the site.

I'm curious building I'm building a second system from leftover parts and it will be for things like, when a friend comes by they can play online as well, but also for some dvd conversion to ipod format. So I was really curious what AGP cards are out there.

My question is is 512 megs of DDR2 RAM and core/memory speeds of 350/540 with 12 pipes better than 128 megs of DDR Ram and 8 pipes unlocked to 16? And if this is an AGP 6800, wouldn't it logically be on the nv40 chipset? So it too could be unlocked to 16 pipes with some luck. The price difference is $60 between this and the XT and I dunno if it's worth it since nobody knows anything about this card. But the next question is, is this card comparable to the 6800GS w/ 12 pipes and 256megs of DDR3 Ram and the nice chance of unlocking to 16 for about $19-45 more?

I read as much of these threads as I can before asking questions, but some of this stuff is confusing.

Thanks,

quote "So is 512 MB of DDR2 Ram and core/memory speeds of 350/540 w/ 12 pipes better than 128 MB of DDR Ram and 8 pipes unlocked to 16?"

Actually, the 6800xt is 128MB on a 256 bit DDR architecture where the N6800 is on 128 bit DDR2 architecture-- I am not sure what the real difference is in performance here.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think DDR1 = 64 bit, DDR2 = 128 bit, and DDR3 = 256 bit.

Here is the list:

_________N6800______6800XT

Memory__512 MB______128 MB

Arch_____128 bit______256 bit

Ram_____DDR2_______DDR

Pipelines__8/?________ 8/12/16

Core/Mem_350/540____325/350 (700 effective)

GPU________?________NV40

Cost________$190____$109

Other than those specs the cards look very similar. Still not sure about the core though.

Ultimately, you have to weigh the pro's and cons yourself. There is a risk in purchasing a card to be unlocked. Others have not been able to unlock their card to the full potential so far in this thread (12p/6s and 16p/5s), and success on the newegg site varies too.

In terms of 6800GS vs 6800XT, the GS takes the cake, it has DDR3 ram and more of it. The 6800XT is an able performer for half the cost of the GS (you can probably find a GS for the same price as the N6800, and I would suggest the GS over the N, it is more well known as an unlocker.)

I based my final decision on my pricepoint ~$100, which is why I went with the XT version.

Wow, thread from the dead...

Both of those coolers should work. If you're interested in the Zalman though, I'd recommend the standard vf700 (AlCu or Cu, maybe 2 degrees difference between the two) for much cheaper than the FatAlberty FS-V7. If you're willing to spend the money on the FS-V7, get the new vf900 from Zalman instead.
