Hi guys!

The fan on my ASUS A7V133 MoBo is very noisy (the one over the chipset, that is) and makes the whole case vibrate!!!

does any one know how to fix this? Is it OK to take out the chipset fan?? I'm planning to use the MoBo at 133 MHz FSB (266 efective) with a CPU multiplyer of 9 = 1200 MHz (My CPU is a T-Bird 1200 MHz)

Thanks!!

you *might* be able to salvage it...peel off the sticker and put a couple drops of oil in there...see if it quiets.

do you know how the MoBo works without the chipset fan? Is it possible or will i burn the MoBo??

Thanks!

First, significant noise and vibration could mean bad bearings or bearing race, so I wouldn't count on oil helping much if that were the case.

Edit: I've noticed others mention that the northbridge chipset fan on this board is noisy (cheap even).

Let us know if you find a solution!

It's the Northbridge chipset fan I'm talking about..... The Athlon fan works right.....

Any ideas?

Thanks!

best idea is still to replace the fan. The MSI KT266a northbridge does not have a fan but has a heatsink.

Dude I think that what happen on that particular motherboard is that the wire that leads from the fan to the motherboard slightly interferes with the fins when the spin. try playing around with the wires a little bit to see if that helps? I've seen this on at least a dozen a7v133's now, where it gets sort of hit on the blade spin and makes a loud clicking noise.

the ASUS a7v133 uses a very cheap fan! My started making noices, i didn't want to put up with it. I called asus then mailed me a fan NO charge. I've seen people just unplugging it 2.

I actually replace the fan with a large passive heatsync on the A7m266 machines I build, as accoustic noise is a major consideration (build rackmounts for use in large audio studios).

Here's a link to a pretty good one:
Zalman

comes with everything you need to replace it inc. thermal stuph

Forgot to mention, the other reason we use asus (besides that they make imho some of the most stable and best mobos) is they have an EXCELLENT return policy compared to other brands. Try that with an abit or epox!

Does anyone know if the chip will be overheated if I just take off the fan? Has anyone had any experience?

You're not alone with cheapo chipset fan problems. They're more of a marketing gimmick than anything else, IMHO. Lots of boards with the same chipset have no fan, just a sink, so you should be safe taking off the fan- well, that's if you're not O/Cing. Or go all-out, get a zalman passive chipset sink from 2cooltek, never mess with it again....

1. Replace the fan or HSF. Blue ORB seems a good choice.
2. Use a decent HS only.

Although the NB fan is not necessary, there must however, be some form of cooling on the NB for stability. Much more if u r O/Cing. The NB tend to be quite hot.
