ASUS A7V133 questions

Hiya - I am looking at an ASUS A7V133 with Athlon 1.2 Thunderbird, and want to know if it will work with my legacy PC100 SDRAM chips, my UltraATA HD and my Voodoo3 graphics card. If anyone could take a stab at this, I would appreciate it!

Also, any stories you might have of the use of this MB/CPU combo would be helpful - or recommendations for other combos, as well....

it will work fine with your hard drive and video card

as for the pc100 thats not a simple answer
tbird 1.2ghz comes in two ways, their are (200mhz) and (266mhz) types, the a7v133 supports both types the 200mhz one runs on a 100mhz bus with a 12x multiplier, (that is 100x12=1,200mhz or 1.2ghz)
the 266mhz one runs on a 133mhz bus at 9x (thats 133x9=1,200mhz or 1.2ghz)

maybe you have figured it out by now but pc100 ram is made to run a 100mhz bus, pc133 ram for 133mhz bus

so you do have the option to use the pc100 ram and run your fsb at 100mhz. the problem with that is you will take a pretty big performance hit

there is the off chance that your pc100 ram will be able to run at pc133 speeds

one other thing to point out, www.crucial.com has some pc133 256mb ram for less then $60 total

I would agree the A7V133 is a very nice MB to use. I'm currently running a 1.333 t-bird and it runs very nice !


PC133 is the way to go with this MB.... hell you can get 512ram these days for less then $200cnd

I want to run the pc100 memory because I just bought 256MB to add to an SE44BX2/PIII combo containing 128MB, which I then proceeded to blow!:disgust: (Power but no POST)

So I'm sitting on 384MB of PC100 that I'd like to use here.

The performance hit will be 200/266 and 100/133, right? Hmm - that's quite a bit. Argh. :Q

It wasn't explicitly said above, but if your 1.2 GHz CPU is supposed to run at (9X133) vs (12X100) and you run your FSB at 100 (to accomodate the PC 100 RAM), then your CPU will run at 9X100 or 900 MHz unless you unlock it and change the multiplier manually to 12.

There are lots of discussions and websites to describe how to unlock your CPU.

Thanks for the info. This system is being brought up as a backup development system *and* a backup server. I am reluctant to twiddle too much. However, I also hate to take the 900 MHz hit on a 1.2 GHz cpu on top of the PC100 memory. How risky is the processor unlock thing? Can you suggest a location for more information on this?

This is only a problem if you have a "C" chip. That is if your chip is rated at 266DDR or 133FSB.

If your chip is of the "B" variety (200DDR or 100FSB), then you're looking cool
