Hi everyone, I've started to game with my new rig and I've come across lock-ups after an hour of play. I've checked out the temperature on the CPU (40C) and videocard (69C) and they are both running fine. I have a revision 2 board but it has the smaller fan on it working loud (I'll check the fan to see if its running normally).

I've got a suspicion that the problem might be the chipset because in other cases instead of locking-up the computer the USB mouse becomes unresponsive and I've read (but might be wrong) that USB is routed through the chipset.

I guess my question is does anyone else agree or have another diagnoses

thanks.

Have you tested your RAM for errors?

I've just assembled a system...ASUS A8N-E, Athlon64 3200+, Award BIOS v6.00PG (ACPI BIOS Revision 1004), 1G RAM. When I turn on, the system freezes at the opening BIOS screen and I get no response from F1 or DEL to enter setup. All my hardware is properly identified on the screen. The screen shows a warning that the computer chip fan has failed, which is understandable because I'm using a fanless Zalman heatsink on the chipset. During boot, there is a double beep immediately followed by four beeps. I can't find that code on the Phoenix/Award site. What should I try next?

Are you using a USB keyboard?

No, I have a PS2 keyboard and it just died. Bad timing, I guess.
So does the system boot ok now? BTW, in case you haven't found it already, there is a setting (I think under the hardware monitoring section) to disable the warning for the chipset fan.

I didn't even consider the ram as a possible cause since I had recently got a new set back for the set I had RMA. I will test it out when I get home and see how it holds up.

Hi there, first post, just bought this mobo, and love it (well, at least when it's in the box). I have a question before I buy some additional parts though.

Will 4 sticks of ram even fit on this boards with either of the Arctic Cooling 64 Silencer TC or the Arctic Cooling 64 Freezer? Which one of these 2 is better?

thanks, great forum!

The Freezer is a better cooler than the Silencer. 4 sticks of RAM will fit with the Freezer installed as the Freezer fan faces up as opposed to the back (which would have been optimal).

Thanks, I've actually reconsidered some things, but am still not sure about the space issue.

I'm thinking about going with the Zalman 7000B heatsink/fan combo, it looks to be good for my needs and I'm positive that the ram will fit. I also prefer they way the fan works.

I'm also going for the zalman zm80d vga silent cooler. I'd like to know if this will fit with the 7000B, if not, I'll have to go with the VF700 (anybody know if the silent cooler will fit).

The last component will be the ZMNB47J zalman chipset cooler. Again, I'm worried about space with the ZM80D in the same general area. Does anybody know at all if all of these components will fit on the a8n-e (I have the new revision with the 45 degree angled stock fan).

thanks again!

The ram will fit easily with the Zalman 7000B. My CPU is currently at a 28% overclock and with the Zalman my CPU temps are 29C idle and never goes beyond 41C under a full load.

I got a keyboard working and was able to disable the fan warning. Now the bigger problem is that the system can't find the OS on my SATA system drive, which has all the settings from my old setup. I tried Repair Install without success, then tried Recovery Console and found XP on E: drive. Copied some install files to C:, did a rebuild of Bootcfg, then ran Repair Install again and finally got a Windows screen. However, it must be a damaged install, because I get a page fault screen showing a problem with SIWinAcc.sys. Not sure what to do next except a clean install. There goes the weekend.

i just put this mobo and a 3200 venice core together.

I updated the BIOS to 1005 and have been having lots of problems getting my network card and audio to work with windows XP 64 bit edition. i downloaded the ASUS marvell ethernet driver and that made my network card show up say that it's working, but still never connected. then i downloaded the nvidia drivers from here:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_winxp64_amd_6.66.html

i installed them and my comp doesn't start up unless i go safe mode and uninstall these drivers. any ideas on how to fix my network to connect to the internet (other comps i have on router can connect) and my audio driver?

Hi. I'm new to the forums.

Picked up all my parts on friday, and I immediately got overclocking.
My Venice 3000+ just finished 24 hours of Prime95 SFFT at 2635(310x8.5).
Everything seems better since I flashed it to the 1007 beta.

With the 1005 BIOS it was unstable at anything past 2.5Ghz for me, as well, if I ran my ram at anything greater than 5/6 ratio, after a reboot I would keep getting a BIOS Checksum Error, would have to clear the CMOS and reflash. Is there any reasoning behind this?

Windows Setup didn't recognize my single SATA drive. Which drivers are recommended...Sil or Nvidia?

Newbie builder here. Just wanting to know, if the A8N-E has native support for a LAN, why would someone buy a
network card for the motherboard? Do dedicated cards just funcion better?

It turns out no drivers were needed to install XP on my SATA. The secret was to disconnect all hard drives except the SATA before running Windows Setup. It then recognized the drive, didn't require drivers and proceeded to install OK. After finishing the install, I reconnected my two IDE drives, booted from the SATA and was back in business.

Some people might have odd network setups, or just don't want to be sharing an internet connection on their network. But the dedicated cards don't use up as much of the processor cycles when compared to onboard, so system speeds are higher in that fashion.
Or at least that's my thoughts on the issue. I've never bothered to/had the money to compare onboard with dedicated, so I can't give a very accurate opinion.

On a side note, my current setup has reached it's limits. Won't even post anymore with a 311x8.5 266ratio. Probably this crappy ram I got. Would I be better off dropping trying to find a higher FSB to maintain the same ram speed, by dropping the multi? Or should I just stick with this and finish tweaking the ram timings? The processor loses all stability if I go any higher right now, not that I feel comfortable with it running 55-58C under load, but the ambient temps are unnaturally high here right now.

From what I have read, A64's dont like half multi. They will cause your ram to run slower.

About a week ago I ordered a replacement 40mm NB fan. I had a 9000RPM SCREAMER. Asus shipped one and said it would take 5-10 business days. A few mornings later I wake up to an absurdly loud noise coming out of my case. So I turn off the computer, turn it back on, and I can hear my 40mm fan on its last legs, whirring and struggling to do its reps. Soon after it dies. Now I've built many computers before and I've never had a part just die on me like that. This is especially surprising coming from a motherboard that is only a few weeks old. Also strange is this is the first "premium" part I have purchased (being ASUS branded, S939 etc). Usually I purchase more mid-range parts. Had an Athlon XP Shuttle before this and an ECS-K7S5A before that. Never had that type of problem with those systems.

So I was laptop only for a few days (I would have been pissed if I didn't have a back computer) until the new fan arrived via Fed Ex. Installed the fan and everything is up and running. Sucks that you have to get to the bottom of the motherboard to remove the old fan as with most cases this means removing the entire motherboard from the case.

After installing the fan I would estimate the noise decreased by about 70%. I was impressed. The fan still runs at 5000 RPMs though, and is the loudest noise coming from my case. After seeing such a dramatic noise decrease, I've been inspired to take it a step further and get either a larger fan or go with passive cooling.

So it?s possible dealing with ASUS is a step that could have been avoided as I may end up choosing my own cooling solution anyway. For those that want a near-silent system, the ?new? NB fan will still be too loud, but it is a dramatic improvement over the 9000rpm screamer.
