I'm studying abroad this fall (in Tasmania hopefully) and obviously won't be able to take my desktop with me. I'm a photographer and a student, so a portable PC would be awesome while I'm on the go -- especially if I can slip it into my camera bag.

For the OS, I haven't decided whether I want to do XP Pro, the stock Linux variant, or Ubuntu. The only programs I'd really want on it are Photoshop, Firefox, and MS Office. Will the 2GB pull this off? Also, I've read that the RAM is only expandable on the 4GB model. Would I be feeling the need to pop in another RAM stick right after purchasing?

I know I can get an SDHC card for it, (and probably will) but how much hard drive space do I really need? I'm just not sure if the extra $50 is justified -- not to mention the 4GB surf doesn't come in blue

If you nlite a copy of XP you can get it to fit in maybe 800MB (or less). Personally memory is so cheap that I'd upgrade anyways.

I don't think the EEE is good for pros. Look at a 13" Thinkpad or something durable...It's tiring to see people whimping out all the time because of sizes. The Eee is a great lil machine, I'll admit that. But what are you going to do with it. I mean 4GB of space? Dude I had a 2GB SD card dor my Samsung S850, and it was filled daily. Within a week my 4 day vacation had over 8GB in pics and video on my Hard drive. Get you a notebook with a decent harddrive (at least an 80), then also by an external to dock to for backups. Carrying around a 6lb is easy. I carry my 17", dual hard drive, 12lb DV9550 with ease at school all day long, and these are days that go from 8AM to 5PM.

I was looking at the EEE PC and I would get the 4GB version if you want to put all that stuff on it. However, I decided to just get a used Thinkpad instead, it ended up being cheaper and more powerful.

If you need a laptop as your main computer the eee isnt the way to go. It doesnt have the speed, power, or storage that you would need for a primary system. As a second computer, it works beautifully.

SDHC is up to 32GB now.

Even 8GB cards are pretty cheap.

I like the EEE, but it is not for everyone. The small screen and keyboard can be a burden.

I wouldn't recommend an Eee for your use.

It doesn't have near the storage you need or the power.

Get a ThinkPad or something.
