At first glance I thought it was shorter than the reference version, but seems like it's about the same.

Note: the Card Size is 11 inches x 5 inches.

generic radeon hd 5970 has 18 cfm
asus ares has 119,21 cfm

generic radeon hd 5970 has 44.5 db
asus ares has 37 db

preformance king
generic radeon 5970 11506
asus ares 14104

same size higher clocks possible cuz of the new cooler. So the asus cards with these coolers are higher clocked then any others. The ares has 600% more air flow. And they are limited editions. So if u can get one then do so. As these cards are vry nice to have.

I got this info from my product book as i work at an asus service/repair center.

Another cool version is the matrix cards or direct to gpu cards or the formula cards. These are all special edition cards/coolers.

OP, official reviews will hopefully answer questions on this card. There was a press release a couple weeks back, basically all I've been able to find so far:

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...5870-matrix-asus-hd-5870-v2-sneak-peek-4.html

Things to consider:

* What headroom the 8-pin + 6-pin config may offer
* PCB layout, how many power phases
* Fan noise at idle and typical load
* Cooler capability

Asus throws some crazy numbers out there, don't read too much into them. You can expect it'll overclock; but wait for reviews that use stock and modded voltage.

I saw a snapshot somewhere, I think it has a 3-4 heatpipe direct contact type cooler. It should do the job nicely but fan rpm/noise is the unknown.

wow..just wow, im not doing any advertizing for this thing (i am in this topic ofc..) but have you guys seen this thing (most of you probably have..)

Asus Ares (5970)
Besides a monstrous cooling solution with a centered fan and two massive copper heatsinks, each of which is interspersed with four heatpipes, Asus equipped the Ares with two 8-pin and one 6-pin power connector to secure sufficient the power supply. In combination with the PCI Express socket the power connectors can provide a maximum of 450 watt to the Ares.

450!!!

what will this thing cost..

The Matrix looks like fun too, it has 2g ram and thats a requirement for me when i do build my rig later this year. But none of those are as brutal as the Ares, it has TWO bloody 8pin and one 6pin power ..thingies. Thats just sick

No cooler will ever make me buy another POS Asus card. That's right Asus you burnt me with a Geforce2 GTS once and you'll never get that chance again...(that also goes for your pathetic 3 year warranty)

I was rather underwhelmed by non-existent Asus support when two of my Asus motherboards died due to bad caps right around the time of the GF2 GTS. Been refusing to pay a premium for their stuff ever since.

Thanks for the post, OP. I ran my 5870 and now run my 5850's with the backplates off specifically to allow more airflow because the reference design is restricting. While I'm sure the card is not for everyone, and will make Eyefinity difficult (if it even supports it), the extra cooling capacity and (hopefully) good quality parts will make 1GHz on something like this a standard.

I purchased this card (to be exact, i got it as replacement after the older ASUS 5870 got vertical lines and was broken) and i am using it for nearly 7 days.
Its quite silent in in idle(at 21%), but after playing the Supreme Commander 2 it was 90C hot and the ventilator was then too noisy (at stock clocks) for me (at 40%). i tried to exchange the cooler for Arctic Cooling AC Accelero S1 rev.2, but the voltage regulators have a custom ASUS layout and aren't directly cooled now. I fear to burn this card, therefore i will try to get back the original cooler (because of VRM modules) and try to remove the plastic cover and use my own 12cm silent fan to cool the heatpipes.

the GPU voltage is unlocked and can be adjusted by ASUS Smart Doctor.
VRM temperatures are unfortunately not reported (at least the GPU-Z 0.4.2 wasn't able to read them), only GPU temp1,2,3.

I am sad about the really noisy VGA coolers, they are selling these days.
and 3rd party coolers usually cool only GPUs and VRMs are left for dead ...
