ASUS P3V4X memory problem.

I have been running forever on 2 128mb sticks of Micron that I bought when Compuwiz was testing and selling the real good stuff. I added a 128mb stick of Infineon...no problem. When I add a 4th stick of Crucial, BOS finds it but WIN98SE will not boot. I've tried all 3 bank combinationsand all work. It's the 4th socket that is the problem I'm OK with 384mb
but I know all 4 pieces are good. Any ideas?

Its been a few years since I've had a P3V4X. If I remember the reviews right, the board had trouble running 133+ fsb with all 4 RAM banks populated. Most 133a boards only had RAM banks because of this problem. I'd suggest getting a 256mb RAM stick or two if you want the extra RAM. I'm not sure it would do you that much good though. Win98se does not gain much with additions to RAM after 256mb (again, another anandtech article I read a few years back).

I remember the same thing when I had my P3V4X. Populating all 4 banks was pretty much bad news.

4 DIMMs (eight ranks of RAM if you use double-sided DIMMs) is definitely pushing it, electrically. You might need to step way down in timings to make that work.

Best would have been to use registered DIMMs. These use helper chips (the registers) to electrically isolate the RAM chips from the most loaded signals on the chipset's RAM bus.
