This has finally arrived. I'm new to anything beyond basic configuration of a wireless router. Where is the best place to read up on taking advantage of the extras this device has to offer?
Thanks

That depends on what you want to do.
I assume you are using the stock firmware, and not merlin or tomato ? (they offer features above what the default Asus firmware offers).

Same question I have. Which is why I'm wondering where the best place is to read to find out what I'm able to do with it. Want to see what my options are. Don't even have it hooked up yet. Is there a good forum somewhere dedicated to just this device? Or any other links would be great as well.
Thanks again.

Although this is often used as a facetious answer, I'm being serious when I say you should start by reading the manual. It will give you a pretty good idea of the features on the router and how to configure them, and then you can decide which ones you want to use and if the manual doesn't have enough info on those, then search specifically for them online.

LOL...Ok, you got me there. I'll run through the manual. Then I'll try to find the web-site for merlin and check that out.

I just installed mine, RT-N66U. It updated the firmware after being prompted, by it's self which is a nice. I've had nothing but Linksys in the past. I looked around and everything looks good and I see nothing I that need extra. DD-WRT is an option if needed.

This is my first 5GHz capable router. I understand the 5GHz band is better for streaming media. My question is it best to leave the SSID and security key the exact same for both bands?

My 4 DirecTV boxes have a wired connection. Only things wireless in the house will be a couple of computers, couple of smartphones, and a couple of tablets that would be used for streaming Netflix or YouTube to the TV that has a Chromecast connected to it.

Thanks for any suggestions. As I said this is my first time working with the dual band.

Thanks,

Chad

AFAIK No fee is involved in trying your Router preferred capability. j/k .

Try both with each device and use on each whatever work better.

We used to have the same SSID for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz but found that sometimes, devices would connect on the 2.4Ghz band, resulting in crappy performance (we had a really congested 2.4Ghz neighborhood).

So nowadays, I always created separate SSIDs so I can ensure that only 5Ghz is being used.

5Ghz is preferable to avoid interference in situations where there are a lot of 2.4Ghz signals nearby. But generally a 2.4Ghz signal will have greater range when there are obstacles/walls in the way since 5Ghz signals don't pass through walls very well.

And I would give the 5Ghz network a different name (even if it's just the same name with a 5 or 5g or something after it) to make sure you are connecting to the one that you want to use.
