I bought an ASUS X99 last August. Thing operated at 4.1GHz like a charm for 9 months. A few weeks ago, when I started doing a lot of 3d rendering, the system would sporadically crash. About two weeks ago it crashed overnight and never came back on, the PSU just made a clicking noise.

So I figure, bad PSU, RMA it, bought a new one in the meantime and same problem. So I RMA'd the board. Today I finally got all the parts back (PSU, Board) and after spending three hours carefully rebuilding the system it powered on for about 5 seconds and shut off.

Now if I disconnect power and hold the power button down, reset, it will boot for about 1 second, display a 00 code and then power down. I've read reviews of this board frying components and now I'm concerned it may have killed my CPU/RAM.

Any ideas on anything else I can try? I've reseated everything, even tried booting without the CPU and still just a code 00. It's been brutal to be without a system for two weeks and now to have it fail all over again...it's a bitter pill to swallow.

what were the temps of the CPU for 9 months? What cooler did you use, did you keep an eye on the temps? What CPU is it?
Most top Asus boards have dual bios, have you hit the switch? I'd contact Intel, there is a number to call them at for an RMA number.

Hey Guys,

Just to follow up on this. CPU is fine, I took the board in to a local Microcenter. Apparently my RMA'd PSU was only putting out 9V instead of 12 AND the RMA'd MoBo was also DOA.

I've purchased a MSI X99S Gamer 7 to replace the ASUS board. Needless to say, I'm very disappointed in ASUS for putting out a product like this. Newegg gave me a $25 credit, ASUS won't do anything except ship me another board.

I've seen reviews on newegg and there are quite a few people who have RMA'd this ASUS board multiple times. Obviously, I don't trust it anymore.

Also, since you asked, I had a coolermaster 120XL liquid cooler. Under full load for 12+ hours the CPU never topped 84C.

PSU was a EVGA Supernova 1200 P2.

" . . never topped 84C . . . " And an AiO cooler. Those suckers are toasty, those E chips!

. . . And that's why my "plan" is taking longer than the building of it . . . Cooling is a priority . . .

Incidentally . . . you say the board is an ASUS X-99. I've been an ASUS fan for years, but they're not above occasional screw-ups.

Which model was it, exactly? MSI is a good bet, but I'd only looked casually at sporadic information . . .

For what it's worth, I'm happy with my ASUS X99-PRO. All mobo makers have their occasional bad boards. If your MSI board breaks down are you going to shun MSI now too? I'm sorry you got a bad board, but it surely doesn't represent the vast majority.

Asus is a rip. X99, go for an Asrock Extreme 4. Nothing fancy, does the job. I normally recommend Gigabyte but Gigabyte X99 mobo's had (have?) shocking UEFI/BIOS issues.
