This thread is for the official support of the ASUS Z97 motherboard series.

Lots of feature changes over the older platforms - from software, UEFI and aesthetics.

Motherboard Info

A comparison table containing all ASUS Z97 motherboard features can be found here: http://www.asus.com/us/site/motherboards/Z97/comparison/

Key Features For ASUS 9 Series Motherboards

New UEFI Features

EZ Setup Screen - One-stop location for simple system setup..

The EZ mode screen allows quick setup of storage BOOT priority, XMP for memory, RAID, overclocking presets via wizards, system time, fan control and many more features.

Fan Controls are now far more intuitive with a graphical interface for setting the fan slope with 3 control points (more than enough to configure any fan) in manual mode as well as 4 preset modes. Full PWM and DC support is present on EVERY fan header across all ASUS Z97 motherboards from the Z97-A to Deluxe, ROG and of course the TUF series.

We've also introduced the ability to map each fan to various temperature sensors on the board instead of having all system fans react to the CPU temp only. For example, the chassis inlet fans can be mapped to PCH temperature which allows the fans to react to temperature changes in that region - GPU environment temperatures for example.

A fan calibration routine has also been added to UEFI advanced mode. The calibration routine determines the minimum rotational speed of each fan and then sets the fan slope minimum value accordingly.

With these features, users can enjoy comprehensive fan control with any operating system as no software is required (although we still have Fan Xpert 3 in Windows - more on that later).

Major Software Changes

Graphically AI Suite 3 is the same as the Z87 series but there have been a lot of functionality refinements that take the software to the next level.

5-Way Optimization - Auto Tuning (Mainstream and WS Only)

Auto Tuning is an automated overclocking routine that tunes a system overclock for the end-user. We’ve had this feature for a few generations now and have been enhancing it year-on-year based upon end-user, media and our internal feedback.

Auto tuning works by running a Prime based stress test on the system. Previously, there was no control over the duration of the stress test. We ran a quick 15 second test and then increased processor clock frequency in steps. For Z97, we've added the ability to set stress test duration up to 1 hour at each step (we can extend this further via an update). Plus we've added a memory stress test to the mix for more stringent overclock testing.

Users can also target frequency or a temperature to tune to. Overall a far more comprehensive set of auto tuning parameters to help make overclocking easy for newcomers and help seasoned users evaluate the overclocking potential of a CPU effortlessly.

Turbo App

Turbo App is the 5th element of 5-Way Optimization. This nifty addition allows us to set dynamic overclocking profiles based upon the application being used.

The advantage of this is two-fold:

1) Overclocks no longer need to be limited by the hottest application we run on our system. Typically, we tune our maximum overclock to the hottest software we will run. With Turbo Ap, we can set higher overclocks for software/games that don’t load the CPU as heavily.

2) The overclock is applied dynamically in real-time as we switch through applications – no need to enter UEFI to change the overclock preset or navigate via various GUIs changing configurations. Turbo App also contains LAN priority and audio presets which will change to our desired setting when the application is active.

Turbo App is simple to use and setup and helps get the most out of each CPU.

Fan Xpert 3

While we have added a comprehensive set of fan control features in UEFI, there’s more on offer in Fan Xpert 3.

i) Full fan calibration for each fan connected to the motherboard.

ii) The ability to control fan spin up and spin down response.

iii) Setting lower speeds for fans that can spin at low duty cycles.

iv) Look up tables for each fan to show RPM versus power or duty cycle.

v) Renaming of each fan for easy reference.

With all of these options at our disposal, just about any fan con be configured to be quiet and react to system temperature changes. Between UEFI and Fan Xpert 3, the options on offer are the most comprehensive ever seen for motherboard fan control. In fact, there’s no reason to invest in a dedicated fan controller at all.

Push Notice

Push notice is an application that teams a mobile device such as a phone or tablet to the PC in order to send system event, sensor or user messages to the remote device. Once a device is paired to the app (requires client software – which is free to download and use) the alerts will work over a local network or via the internet. This means the messages will be received no matter where you are, provided internet access is available.

System events such as configured restarts, system shutdown or sleep can be set and a message sent to the remote device at a user configured time before the event occurs.

Power supply voltage and CPU package temp warnings can also be set to trigger an alert message to the paired remote device.

Revised Audio deisgn (mainstream)

Mainstream motherboard audio has been revised for 9 series – physically similar layout techniques to the ROG boards to prevent crosstalk.

Other changes include a RTL circuit to prevent DC thump for all outputs while the Deluxe model gets a buffer amplifier to drive either the front headphone jack or rear output jack. The buffer is only needed when connecting hedphones with an impedance over 120 ohms or so to provide additional voltage gain and prevent excessive roll-off at frequency extremes.

I'll be building a system with a Z97-Pro this weekend or next week. I plan on using five fans total, all PWM, inside a Fractal Designs Define R4. Two intake at front of case, two on my Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 CPU cooler (which uses dual PWM fans, and I made sure to get the needed mounting kit for 1150), and one exhaust in the back of the case. I've some experience putting together systems, but am still very much a beginner. Will it be pretty obvious and intuitive on how best to connect these fans to the motherboard and set up for maximum quiet?

its very intuitive. You know, CPU fan to CPU fan connector etc. After installing the fans you can rename them in Fan Xpert 3 as you want (example "my little back fan" etc )

Raja, just wondering when using either a m.2 ssd or a single sata express drive will the pcie 3.0 still run at x16 or x8 on the Asus z97 Deluxe and the z97 WS?

I just built pretty much the exact same system with the same motherboard, case, and fans.

Everything should be spelled out in the manual. Make sure you install the AI Suite, which includes Fan Expert. In Fan Expert you can run the fan tuning feature, and select the silent preset when you're done.

In my setup in typical web browsing use, only the CPU is running at about 250rpm, which is enough to keep my CPU at 43c. My video card and hard drive are the only things I can hear in my system, and it's very quiet.

Hi Folks,

I received my Z97-Pro yesterday and was checking through the manual.
I need a little help. I believe the sata express connection can be used for 2 regular sata drives, so that brings the total number of drives the mobo can handle to 8 ?

If that is true and I hook up 8 sata drives, where should the boot drive be located ? On Sata6G_1 or on one of the two sata express ports labeled Sata6G_5 and Sata6G_6 ?

Yes 8 normal drives can be used. Any Intel sata port can be used for boot.

I'm starting the plans to build my 1st desktop and need mobo advice. I'm looking at the Asus Hero VII, Asus Z97-Pro, Asus Z97-Deluxe. Asus Z97-WS. The main dilemma I have is how Z97 handles its storage/PCIE lanes this is all new to me. I'm trying to build a SLI config (780 TI) with M.2 and Thunderbolt II to make my dekstop as future proof as I can. What really confuses is that the PCIE and the lanes running on the motherboard. If I want SLI and thunderbolt and/or M.2 running am I forced to get the Z97-WS to have 3/4 lanes running at 8x8 (2 lanes at 8x8 for the GPUs and another for the Thunderbolt II) If I get the Z97-WS would I still be able to use an Intel i7-4770/ i7-4790k processor with it?

TB EX II needs X4 for full performance not X8. However, to do M.2 and TB EX II "effectively", you would need the WS.

4770K and 4790K will both work in the Z97-WS.

Just a hint/tip never but never try to make a future proof system this is impossible. Because you can't it will always be something in few months that will make your system to kneel and say "oh my Grace" . except you have a 10-15k budget to play each year. Quad sli gpu, surround 4k monitor, extreme X cpu, custom water cooling so you can play pacman on ultra settings.

I guess I shouldn't have used the words future proof. With the incoming 4k monitors and resolutions thunderbolt II can run 2 monitors in 4k at 60hz. A SLI GTX 780 Ti config should be able to handle the load. If either SataE or M.2 storage takes off then I'll be covered. Its only an extra 70 more than the Asus Hero VII I'm not planning on getting my parts until around Oct by then maybe a more suiting board will come out for what I'm looking for.

its nice of asus to see they are making an effort to reach out to their customers; this might change my opinion of them as a company.

I've got mine built now too! It's nice that the fan connectors are all identical and can all control PWM. I plugged all my fans in individually to whichever connector they were closest too, no y splitters. After setting all of them in bios to PWM and silent, that's pretty much what I got! I haven't checked to see which fans are running when web browsing, but probably similar to yours too.

I have question about the support of 4K monitors in this motherboard. In the specifications it is written:

- Supports HDMI with max. resolution 4096 x 2160 @ 24 Hz / 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz
- Supports DisplayPort with max. resolution 4096 x 2160 @ 24 Hz / 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz
- Supports Mini DisplayPort with max. resolution 4096 x 2160 @ 24 Hz / 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz

So there is no explicit mention about the UHD resolution 3840x2160 @ 60 Hz. Is this resolution supported by the Z-97 WS?

The question arises since e.g. in the Z-97 Deluxe specifications, support for the UHD is listed directly:

- Supports HDMI with max. resolution 4096 x 2160 @ 24 Hz / 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz
- Supports DisplayPort with max. resolution 4960 x 2160 @ 24 Hz / 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz
- Supports Mini DisplayPort with max. resolution 4960 x 2160 @ 24 Hz / 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz

I suppose the Z-97 WS also supports UHD resolution but need to be certain about this since 4K is vital for me.

AFAIK the resolution is supported.

I'm curious to see how the Hero VII stacks up against the SOC Force and the OC Formula. All really great looking boards IMO. I'm just waiting a while more to see how these end up being reviewed by consumers.

Anyone know the most current revision number for the Maximus VII HERO motherboard? I just got one from my nearest Microcenter and it is V1.01.

Tried google but didn't find it anywhere, even on Asus site.

Hi Raja,

Now I am trying to debug my SATA express device on this board (Z97-WS) and I need some help.

I know the SATA express ports can be used as two regular SATA ports. I tried to move my boot disk to connect to different SATA ports. However the 4 SATA express ports didn't work. All the other 4 regular SATA ports worked.

Also I have seen in the BIOS that there are totally 6 SATA ports. Shouldn't there be 8 if each SATAe can be used as two SATA?

And there is a "SATAE_LED" label beside the SATAe ports but I didn't see any LED lightning there. Maybe the SATAe ports are disabled by default? But I have enabled all the controllers in BIOS~

I have the Z-97 Pro, which has only one SATA Express connection, but the two ports work just fine as regular SATA ports. Use them every day.

Hello to the forum, I did a search here and did not find info for the question I have.....

I recently bought a Z97 Sabertooth Mk1 and built a system. The UEFI is version 2304. Current UEFI is 2601. Should I update through the UEFIs from 2304 to 2601 or is it OK to go straight to the newest?

Thanks
