i have an old 440bx/1.1ghz p3 celeron/384mb ram that i'm trying to use as a linux box doing only. it has an old vid card on agp, sb16 on isa, and 2 pci cards: nic and ata133 controller.
in order to extract maximum overall filetransfer performance, should i keep the 80gb ata100 hdd on the mobo ata33 hdd controller? or should i use the pci ata133 controller?
my thoughts are that if both nic/hdd are using the pci bus, it could severely reduce overall file transfer (defined as linux box -> my laptop, since bt transfer should not max out the linux box). so while the mobo ata33 controller is really slow and old, it could -- just an uneducated guess here -- raise file transfer performance slightly by spreading the load. afterall, the pci bus is 33mbps only.
but thats just my hypothesis. while i know computers, i dont know them at the depth that would provide a good answer to this question. so i'm hoping somebody can help me out here.
