I recently pulled out an ide zip 100 from my 'rents computer because they got a burner and didn't have any more ide ports. So I threw it in my system , it recognized it as a removable drive and I was off.

Except I decided to install the 'iomegaware' software. After installing and rebooting, windows assigned the drive letter 'D' instead of assigning all my partitions, then assigning removable storage drive letters. This normally wouldnt be a problem except all of my programs are on drive D, and some of them (norton antivirus) wig out when the program isn't on the right drive.

I have disconnect, removable, and int 13 enabled. I tried unclicking int 13 but it reenabled on reboot. There is no pull down menu for the drive letter, its is fixed.

Any ideas? This is bugging the hell out of me cause Id really like to use the drive.

Thanks for the help.

if there is a zip disk in the drive, it will assign it d:\ otherwise it will remain on what was b4 Eg (f
[zip drives are classified removeable disk, that why it changes drive letters]

There is a way u can do this w/ iomegaware, i just forget where to do it. it been too long

PS I don't use iomegaware.. W98 sees it just fine

don't know if this will work but in bios change the detection of your zip from auto to none & see if the drive lettering changes in windows!

My Zip drive behaves the same way, though mine is parallel-port connected. I've lost the documentation, but there was some reference to internal scsi controller that doesn't play by DOS rules.

You should be able to defeat this behavior by assigning a higher letter to the device. My zip is now device N:. I can add/remove devices at will without any zip interference.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the ideas guys. I did contact a tech at iomega who also told me to disable the ide port in the bios. This works (yay!)

However doesn't this nullify its ability to be a boot disk? I probably wouldn't need to use a zip for something like that, but it would be nice to know I could.

Again, thanks for the suggestions

There is a service that the zip drive runs called ziptoa which will allow the zip drive to recognized as if it was the a drive allowing you to use it as a boot disk. Im not sure how it works, i guess it runs automatically. I disabled it because it slows my startup and shutdown time. You might look into this
