I wonder if they took into account the loss of the mens U. S. Basketball team to Puerto Rico!

Unlike America, China and Russia both compel their athletes with life-changing financial incentives. In a nation like Russia one would get a $50,000 monthly pension for winning a single gold medal, while getting a gold medal in China would almost guarantee a popular clothing line or business venue. For the athletes in Russia and China, gold medals aren't simply about practicing to be your athletic best, it's also about striving to live a life that can be comparable to living in America or another economically advanced nation. Americans are neither pressured by these financial burdens nor are they forced to become the best like some athletes are in China and Russia.
So... it's ok for Americans to not be the best ? Aren't they trying to be the best ? They know who they're up against and it's evidently still not enough... bottom line is they have not won (generally speaking)... which is the whole point of the Olympics.

Anyway, they'll catch up when other sports are introduced...

Chinese and Russian athletes win either because they have a gun pointed to their head or they have millions to go after, while US athletes didn't win because there was no gun or money. That sounds like a pretty good reasoning to me.

sheesh when i read the title i thought they would be in like 15th or so. sheesh.

China's diving team kicked a$$ the other day. they were great. And from what they were saying that is not the #1 team they have! but like others have said there is a long way to go.

US is catching up fast. 3 golds already for today. In women's fencing, the Chinese star tan Xue beat the #1 ranked Sara Jacobsob of USA but lost to #4-ranked American Mariel Zagunis. So US got gold and bronze while China only got silver.

I always joke with my GF when we see the Chinese perform. When they screw up, I say, "well, they're probably shooting his/her parents as we speak."

Yep.

And she can understand basic things like how gays have sex and that metal and gems are natural resources. She can also understand how to edit a post instead of quoting herself and adding stuff.

But then, she's smart like that.
