I have a water cooling system in my other computer, its the iceberg unit. My nephew unplugged the water pump from the wall and i was unaware and booted up the system. I went to do windowsupdates and it froze giving me a BSOD. I rebooted and tried to install ms office xp, it froze in the middle. I think realized the tank was off and threw a heatsink on it and rebooted after giving it time to cool down a little. It booted fine but when I do extreme heavy cpu usage it freezes. just surfing the web, aim, and small installations it seems to be fine. is the cpu fried?

thanks in advance,
Matt Enderle

Note.. i started norton scanning to see if it would freeze and its been going about 5-6 minutes and no freeze ... nvm it finally froze.

maybe while it was without the pump, it got so hot that thermal padding or grease got melted on there. Take your cpu out, clean the core very carefully, then re apply thermal grease and see if it freezes anymore.

It might have had some damage to it. Can you look at it and see if there is anything noticeable wrong? And how big is your heatsink?

Ya i noticed that when i changed the water cooler back to the heatsink, the grease had spread to the other little chips (i dont know what they are called), and i remember someone told me to only apply the grease to the core. i used a qtip and cleaned it all off, not extremely well but i did the best that i could, and applied the heatsink. the heatsink is the one that i got in the box with the CPU.

I will pull it out and clean it better and look for burnt spots and post the results on here.

Thanks for your replies.

That might be part of the problem. You should clean the processor with high rating isopropyl alcohol so that none of the thermal goop is shorting out any bridges on the processor. I forgot about that on older processors. Sorry!

The CPU could be fried, if only a small part of it was affected. The same thing happened to my roommate's computer .. he didn't have watercooling, but his heatsink fan failed. He didn't know until he smelled something burning. Once he got a new heatsink and installed it properly, the PC was never the same .. random lockups, occasional reboots etc.. It worked, but not the way a good PC should.

I had a Pentium3 burn out its SSE unit. It would work flawlessly under any amount of load until something tried to use SSE, and then it would instantly reboot. Grab yourself a new CPU, it won't cost much.

Is there anyway to just test the CPU? Maybe the OS is corrupt for some reason.. will best buy do testing on it.. serious testing with results that actually mean something?

thanks
