I have been searching every notebook/laptop manufacturer I can find but just cann't find an Athlon 64 notebook with DVI... WHY?

I want a laptop but I want one I can use for 4 years or so, so I want 64 bit as a requirement (especially since I will be using linux).

Additionally, I REQUIRE DVI, mostly because I don't want to buy any more garbage VGA monitors, particularly when those 19" Dell LCDs look pretty good. <smiles>

So... any thoughts? I would like to keep it relatively inexpensive, but I can see spending around $1,500... I just can't find ANY though.

Why is this and why don't they get a clue and stick DVI on them? It is easy to get a DVI->VGA converter but it isn't worth it to convert the other way.

edit: lol...i made suggestions...most, if not all were intel based...the "Athlon 64" in the title totally flew past my head....

still doing a quick little search for you buddy, if i find anything, ill let you know

edit: there are very few lappys with DVI to begin with but all with the exception of maybe one or two(that we've yet to find) are intel based. im not surprised. intel just has this monopoly. im looking into buying a nice SFF but i cant find a single friggin socket 939 SFF with all the features i want while their intel versions are full of all the features i want. i checked new egg for a socket 939 SFF...there were like 7. intel socket 775...there are 18 of em. getting back to DVI...they are hard to find on laptops as is...and trying to find them on an amd based machine is even more difficult because of this monopoly. hope intel gets screwed from this lawsuit between them and amd!

LOL

I briefly looked earlier but no A64 notebooks came to mind; duh I didn't lump Turion into that group.

The Ferrari 4000 is a great match for that. Acer is also coming out with other Turion models, and hopefully some of them will have DVI as well. We will have info on the Acer Aspire 5020 (15.4" Turion w/X700) very soon

Thanks to ShellGuy for linking to our first impressions of the Ferrari 4000; the full review will be out ASAP, with tons of sexy pics and performance comparison to the Acer 8104 (2GHz Pentium M w/X700).

I still don't understand what waiting to answer OP's question meant...

I have found this one... looks to be a much better deal than the Ferari...

http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/highendsystem/ntbkx649900.asp?v=d

But yeah, those are the ONLY two that I can find and it is driving me nuts... especially since I have seen a LOT of laptops with DVI, odly enough... just all of them are Intel.

And as for the SFF space... it actually baffles me that Intel does so well there. I mean P4s are heaters, NOT processors.

And I still don't understand the purpose of putting a VGA port on ANYTHING. I mean seriously, it is so easy to convert DVI to VGA with one of those little adapters if you need a VGA port, but you really can't go the other way and get a good signal, and beyond that... all good monitors are DVI anymore, so why? WHY COME OUT WITH NEW PRODUCTS THAT LOOK LIKE GARBAGE ON THE MONITOR??? I just don't understand it...

4 years means you don't want to buy an AGP graphics card and an A64 won't give you great battery life.

The Acer 5020 series will be based on the Turion 64, have X700 graphics, and MIGHT have DVI for around $1500. Wait for more details on that, or just bite the bullet and get a Ferrari 4000 (Turion 64 2GHz, 15.4" WSXGA+, X700, DVI)

Well, I just guess 4 years because I tend not to upgrade too terribly often, so that is a complete shot in the dark. I tend to replace something after running it into the ground. And I am not looking RIGHT NOW... I am just trying to see what is going on incase I do have to upgrade soon because I may have to for vacation so I can still work (I am a desktop guy and build everything I use).

Actually, that is the one thing that REALLY tweaks me about laptops. I mean, it would be so easy to have an industry standard motherboard format and then just have the case dictate what you could have in them (1 or more batteries, 1 or more optical, etc etc). Sure you would have to have a standard for 12", 14", 15", 17", etc screens, but man... I would kill for standardization of the laptop market. Then how then or whatever a laptop was would depend more on the case manufacturer. Oh well... I can dream.

The reason that I was thinking about that though is what does it matter if it has an AGP graphics card... you can't upgrade laptops like that, can you? I mean, if you buy it, it is basically like a brick, aside from changing out the ram or something... at least as far as I thought.

The newer lappys are commin out with PCIE cards which means that you MAY be able to upgrade them but from what I read only RAD with RAD and Nvidia with Nvidia. They are working on being able to upgrade the lappys more n more just much slower than Desktop market. the first Dell XPS lappy was to have an upgradeable card in it.
