Athlon 64 X2 4000+ EE

Hi Guys,

I was thinking of upgrading my system (mobo: GA-K8NS Ultra-939) with an Athlon 64 X2 4000+ EE. What does the 'EE' stand for?

Here, Gigabyte shows all the processors that are supported by this mobo. No mentioning about a X2 4000+ EE. Should I be worried about it?

Curiosity question: (after reading some posts here) I know that socket AM2 processors will work on socket 939 mobo's. What happened to that 1 pin (939 pins vs. 940)?

ToXiC, I'm not sure who told you that Skt. 939 motherboards support AM2 processors, but whomever it was, was completely wrong. Unless you own an AsRock Dual-SATA2, or Dual-VSTA motherboard, and have already bought the adapter that allows them to use AM2's and DDR2, then you're gonna have to buy yourself a Skt. 939 X2.

It states on the Gigabyte site here that my mobo supports AM2 processors. The list does not have the 4000+ on it but that's details. Besides, what happened to the longevity of the 939 socket? Isn't AM2 the extension to the 939's life? All over this forum people in my shoes say that they just plugged in a AM2 processor into a 939 socket and it was all good.

I think I am right but can someone take this wrench out of my wheel so that I don't waste my money? Can the GA-K8NS Ultra-939 Gigabyte mobo take the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ EE w/ 2x512K Cache (Socket AM2)?

Looks like the 4000 X2 EE is socket AM2: it will not fit a socket 939 board. There is no socket 939 version of a 4000 X2 EE.

What is a bit confusing is that the AM2 has 940 pins: but, it will NOT fit the old socket 940 motherboards....hence the "AM2" name.

you need to buy a socket 939 chip. toledo or denmark are your friends! denmark is opteron 1xx, go check out neweggs skt 939 offerings here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...2820275&name=Dual-Core

ToXiC, your link doesn't work, but I found the page: link. Your motherboard supports almost every version of the Skt. 939 dual-core processors (except for most Opterons), and that's all. Like I said in my first post, the only two motherboards ever to support both Skt. 939 & AM2 processors are the two AsRock boards I mentioned, and they only do it if you buy an add-on riser board.
