Anecdotally I've heard that this won't give much of a noticeable performance boost for single-threaded app's over a single core 4000+, but Tom's Hardware seems to tell a different story (link). Trying to figure out if this is worth an interim upgrade.

This would be a very wise upgrade, IMO. For only 67 bucks you cannot go wrong. These also overclock pretty well (2.6 - 3.0 Ghz). The beauty of it is, you just slap the CPU in, sell your old one for 15-20 bucks and bingo!

Sure, it doesn't perform as well as the C2D, but it is no slouch either and doesn't require new memory, or a new motherboard.

I bought that chip about a month ago for $75 which replaced my 3700+. I honestly don't notice much difference. I just wanted a dual core until my next upgrade. I ended up also buying it with the mobo combo and put my old 3700+ into that one and making a new PC out of it. Also take note that this chip only has 512KB L2 cache per core.

Link for the lazy. I just got in on the X2 3800 action a couple weeks ago. It was $10 less, so I don't know whether to be happy or sad.

Well I bought it.

The promo code gets you a little discount that's just enough to offset the sales tax, so tax and shipping&handling are all essentially free. My total invoice including everything came to $72.39.

After teetering between this route or getting an AM2 + new mobo + new DDR2 ram, I finally decided it seems more practical to extend the life of this 939 with a cheap cpu upgrade & some more ram, to wring another year or 18 months out of this box.

For me, better to wait for awhile to see what happens when Barcelona/Phenom or Penryn. are out.

Next: a video card upgrade!

I'm still running on a 3700+ San Diego, and although it would be nice to be able to extract archives (which I do a lot of) without turning my computer into a snail, I want to put my money towards a new video card for the biggest upgrade. And I'm going to need a new PSU to support said video card, so...

Anyone else having problems with the code? It doesn't work for me, it says: "This promo code you entered is only available for specific programs."

I'm pretty sure Newegg codes only work for people who are subscribed to their newsletter. I think you can subscribe now, and it work, but it may take up to a day before you're in their system.

I gave in and ordered one. I wasn't going to bother as I'm in the process of building a new c2d machine, but for the price, what the heck. It will replace an older 3500+ chip. Thanks Op.

I wonder how many of these they have in stock and whether they'll be more price decreases in the future (along with decreases on the Optys). Still, I might order one. It's very tempting.

A steal at that price. Great way to give an older rig some more life. And for those wondering about the benefits, yes you may not notice much increase in speed for some apps over your single core processor, but the multi-tasking boost you get is awesome.

I'd be disappointed if they couldn't do 230 x 11 = 2.53 Ghz at stock. Anyone know what kinds of steppings people are getting.

It makes sense to still take a hot deal on a Socket 939 cpu.

After all, it sounds like Socket AM2 is mostly just about the ram. This is copied from AMD's web site:

Q: What are the major differences between socket AM2 and socket 939-pin?

A: Socket AM2 provides support for DDR2 memory. Socket AM2 is almost identical to socket 939 but uses a protective mechanism (a manufacturing ?key?) designed to prevent any socket 939-pin CPUs (DDR1 only) from being inserted into a socket AM2 motherboard, and to prevent socket AM2 CPUs (DDR2 only) from being inserted into a socket 939-pin motherboard.

I broke down and bought one, going to pass my old one over to my wife's PC. With this move, I have chosen to delay any c2d upgrades for at least a year.

You'll have to sign up for it if you want this price. That's how they run their specials. Newegg's promo mail is one of the very few I signed up for, just for deals like this. I set up a free e-mail address just for this purpose so I know what I get is from them.

DANG IT! I purchased the 3800 X2 from newegg a day before this came out for 57. Still a good deal, but I would have rather paid another $10 for another 200 MHz.

I'm in for one! I'm replacing a FX-55. I know it's not a big improvement, but I'd like to try a dual-core CPU. $69 makes it a no-brainer.

I spent $400 22 months ago, but I got Nero 7 Ultra Edition for free; been running it at 220x11 since then.

Ya im not even listing what I paid for my single core athlon a few years ago. I just got in on this for an older machine and cant help but think back to the E6600 I got for 300 and change with a motherboard from frys almost 2 years ago, that has to be the best bang for the buck processor wise ive bought since the K7 days.

Huh, I haven't played with this thing in a while. 230x11 @ 1.3875V and 2.8V RAM seems to be running pretty stable.

2 instances of Prime95 running, 49C.
