it all depends on how much money you want to spend. if you dont have a lot but want a good chip, get the duron. i have a duron 800 and im working on OCing it. the athlon and the thunderbird are the same chip, i think. so basically all you are looking for there is the MHz to decide. the tbird has more L2 cache which helps in code compiling and stuff like that. but, IMHO, once you get to about 900MHz+...it makes no diff =) the tbird is rated to have a 8-10% increase is speed under strain than the duron. but thats fine with me...the rest of my system easily makes up for that. so its up to you buddy. thats just my .02 =)

If you need "very high performance", go with a T-Bird. If you want a RAID board, get the Abit KT7-RAID or Abit KT7A-RAID, depending on whether or not you want the 133MHz FSB.

Well essentially yes, but the "Classic" Athlons ran only in slot a while Tbirds run in both slot a and socket a arch.

I would go for a Thunderbird, as they have more Cache and such. But if money is way on the downside, then get the Duron. But I think a Duron 850 and a Thunderbird 850 are very close in price, like by $10 bucks or something. Look on pricewatch, and then check with resellerratings.com to see if it is a respectable dealer.

If your a gamer you only want the TBird! That L2 cache is crucial for performance, especially at higher clock speeds. This is because the processor will end up wasteing clock cycles just waiting on data to come in from RAM or your HD. If you're planning on overclocking past the 1G mark I would (and did) go with the TBird.

A bit of an old article but still relevent.
AMDZone

A good video card will be more important then the top speed processor. Look through the benchmarks in Anand's reviews.

It's simple really. If price is not an issue, go for TB, if you want the best value then go for Duron - at least that's true according to the German prices.
Do what etech said, look at some comparances and benchmarks.

Here's a vote for the Duron 700. Get here for around 50 bucks and clock her up to nearly a gig. Now thats a price/performance ratio
