I currently run an Athlon Classic 700. I have $150 to burn, and I'm trying to decide if this upgrade is worth the money.

$150 for an Athlon TBird 900 Slot A.

Would you do it?

To note, I have attemped to overclock my current processor (the 700) and was only able to attain 800 mhz with slight stability problems. No hope of going faster. I did use a goldfinger devise (TD-2) to unlock the processor. Pretty upsetting, considering the 700 has an .18 micron core.

Thanks for any input.

System specs:

K7M Mobo
GF2 GTS 64 meg
SB Live
256 Crucial PC133 cas2 RAM
10GB HD

I kind of faced the same question a while back with my Slot 550(which I was able to get to 864 ). Fortunately, I was able to find a buyer for my old mobo, ram, and cpu. So I was able to upgrade to what I have today.

If I were you, I would wait until I had enough money to buy a new cpu and mobo. A 900mhz cpu would do very little for your systm.

Kinda figured.

If I did anything, I would probably upgrade to a Socket A TBird 1G and Abit KT7A-RAID. Think that would be more noticeable?

Thanks.

I'd stick with what you got if I were you, and then go socketA Tbird 1GHz+ later.

The reason you can't overclock is (most likely) that your L2 SRAM chips won't play along because they are on a 1/2 divider. You wil need to lower the L2 multiplier on some way. If you can get into windows @800 you can use H.Oda's software to lower it from 1/2 to 2/5

Thanks everyone. I'll try that proggie to change the L2 divider. Might as well squeeze out what I can outta mine.

Perhaps that $150 would be better served on an IBM 30g HD. Gotta be faster and quieter than the POS OEM Maxtor 10g I'm running now.

I have a slotA Tbird in a late K7M that runs 1100Mhz. stable as a rock with a GFD and a FSB of 110Mhz and X10 multiplier.
