Athlon X2 temp monitoring

I'd like to preface this by saying that though this is my first post, I've been browsing this site and its forum for 2 years. Armed only with this I've built two systems: first a athlon xp system and more recently a athlon x2 on an nforce4 chipset. Thus, I'd like to say for all the helpful advice. I'd to specifically thank mechBgon for his wonderful website.

Now, I've been monitoring my temps using the Asus probe utility. The cpu idles at 40-41 degrees and maxes out at 56 degrees under load. I've checked the temps in the bios and gotten the same readings. I'm using the retail HSF. I haven't experienced any problems and the heatsink is cool to touch. Are these temps right? I won't overclock until I need extra juice, but the temp is bothering me as is the noise from the cpu fan.

I tried searching but didn't come up with anything too helpful for my situation.

Thanks in advance.

What are your ambient temps, in case?
Have you viewed CPU temp in BIOS? for idle temp?
Some 4200's came with a HS/F that has heatpipe exchangers, (like the 4400), while some had the regular HS/F as the Athlons.
Which is yours?
The heatpipe model does an excellent job, for stock, according to reviews.
What thermal paste did you use? Applied in correct amounts? (sorry, must ask...)
What is the temp of your 7800? Contributing to case ambient?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Not sure how find out the ambient temp in case or the 7800 temp. Ambient temp in the house is 77 degrees F. The CPU came with the normal HS/F I believe. I used the normal thermal paste that came on the HS.

The temps reported in the BIOS are the same reported by Asus probe.

I think the 4200+ comes with the heatpiped cooler. Your temperatures are not bad, to tell the truth, especially if you really dont have the heatpiped HSF. Even so, most people have lower temperatures, so your problem could be bad contact between the heatsink and the CPU's IHS or just sensor inaccuracy. To combat noise you'd have to go to a third-party heatsink, preferably one that has a 12cm fan and allows you to control the input voltage.

arctic silver 5 =

Everest has good temp readings, at least for me anyway, and it also shows me my video card temp.
